I don't know whether this shrub is available in North America but grows wild here. It is one of the plants of the Acanthaceae family that also includes the golden shrimp plant. I haven't seen seeds, but know it does produce them. It's flowers are pollinated by the short billed hummingbirds. While trying to pull up some plants elsewhere on the farm, a Cinnamon hummer was hovering around waiting for me to move on.

I will keep checking out the various plants throughout the farm and see if I can find seeds, then I can 'disperse' some to those who would like to try them.

Peter, I would say about 75F. According to my plant book, the distribution of this plant is from Southern Mexico to northern South America, and in the West Indies. In Costa Rica it grows from sea level-1,750 mts. which could be in the rain forest, and is obviously a lot cooler than where we live.
It is one of those plants that you don't notice until it is in bloom. Right now, there is lots of it along the sides of road and throughout the finca.
