Nancy and I headed out Tuesday morning to Thibodaux to see what we could catch. The first stop was Beth and Sammy's yard; the sun was just starting to rise over the sugarcane fields. As Rufous were buzzing overhead we quickly caught 7 of which 3 were returnees. The next stop was Paula's whose yard yielded an Allen's. Nancy pointed out the tail feathers which are different than Rufous but not ususally apparent in the field. Last stop was Janell's where we trapped 2 rufous and an Adult male hummer. We finished the day back at Beth and Sammy's where I was able to get a few shots. A beautiful day.

Joan and Nan,
Great report and great banding results. I got a nice warm fuzzy thinking about the sun coming up over those sugar cane fields and the hummers buzzing about. Joan, You do create beautiful pictures with your descriptions as much as you do on canvas!

Thanks gang. The first picture was taken right as we arrived. The archway is over a gate through the back fence that opens to the cane fields. I took a few pictures later in the day when the sun came up.

Steve,
Don't fret - Rufous have shown up in virtually every state in the United States, at one time or another, and even if you never see one in your yard, there is always travel. I'll probably never get to see a Magnificent, a Blue-throated, a Lucifer, a Costa's, or a White-eared in my yard, but my trek to Arizona last fall yielded all those species.
And if you come down this way during the right season, it's not out of the question to see not only Rufous, but Black-chinned and Buff-bellieds, not to mention the possible occasional Broad-billed, Broad-tailed, Allen's, or Anna's - although these, too, can often be found in the west or southwest.

Dear Joan and Nan, Oh my what memories those lovely pictures brought back! Beth and Sammy's place, that beautiful view overlooking the Sugar cane fields...I can just hear the buzzing around of the hummers once again...What a feeling!
Thanks for the report and pictures Joan. So good to hear about all the returnees Nan... Y'all are having such fun...wish I were there too! There was nothing better than seeing it in person but this was great.

I remembered you were in that yard. There was a Buffy in the yard that year hanging in the Turk's cap cussing us out. We heard a Buffy at the end of the day on the 13th but didn't see him. But we will be back in that yard soon!
