Hi all, here is another of the thousands of images I brought back with me from Costa Rica. I am still in awe of all I saw on that trip!

[linked image]

Special thanks to Nancy for helping correct the ID on this one!

THANKS!!

Your 'Mangrove Hummingbird' from Monteverde is
almost certainly a female Green-crowned Brilliant
[Heliodoxa jacula]. Mangrove Hummingbird is
endemic to the mangrove swamps of the Pacific
coast from the Golfo de Nicoya to Golfo
Dulce. One would rarely see one about 100 feet
elevation, much less the 4000-5000 feet of Monteverde

Nan

Do you know how difficult it is to ID these birds when all you have is a small book on Birds from Costa Rica? They give so LITTLE information and pictures! Please consider this an open invitation for anyone to advise me on this with any image that I may post!

Great shots Mark!
You may wish to buy the book 'Hummingbirds in Costa Rica' by Michael&Patricia Fogden, which has fantastic photos of nearly all the hummingbirds in Costa Rica that will assist you with the ID. Lots of good information as well.
