Are they attractive to hummingbirds????????????The one flowr plant could be a alamanda trellis. I got three of them in the basement .Last year I was told it is not attractive to hummingbigbirds.I hope enjoy your vacation there.
The yellow are Allamandra and ARE attractive to hummingbirds. Ecspeccially when you have alot of them like in the picture.
Patrick,
I just got back from Puerto Escondido (Oaxaca state) on Monday. We were there for 2 weeks. It was a very last minute trip which is why no one here knew I was going. My sister called 2/2/09 that they were leaving 2/16 and did we want to go with them. They bought a Casita there 5 years ago and rent it out until they officially retire. It was a nice trip with alot of local flair. It was nice not staying in some resort and hardly venturing outside of the compound. I posted some bird pics on feathered friends, check them out!!!
Yes it was realy hard coming home to NJ and all the SNOW and no blooms!! Maybe those spring bulbs will start popping out of the ground soon though from the soaking...
The (first & last pic) plants are Bougainvilleas. We grow lots of them in Florida. Not a great Hummer plant, and thorny as daylights. Birds love building nests in them against predators.
Pretty pics!

Photos of #5 & # 6 are Cassia alata, the same as the seeds I mentenioned were available last week.
#7 look like an Allamanda cathartica but the blooms look much smaller.
All are beautiful. The red passiflora are enjoyed by hummers, here, but others are not.
My computer seems to have lost the first attempt at this. As a spur of the moment activity Mexico has to trump something like breaking a leg. Isn't Mexico great once you get out into the country? The countryside has always felt kind of comfortable and the birds.... I wonder if I'll ever return?
Yes, Pam, sounds like y'all had a very nice trip, a beautiful respite from the cold dark winter of the north. Ward, I also wonder if I'll ever get back. It has been a long time since I spent any time in Mexico.

Pam, while looking again, at photo #7, I am changing my 'guess' to them being 'Carolina jessamine', not Allamanda.
The blooms are very similar as I mentioned, but the new growth doesn't resemble the Allamanda either.
I was told by the wners the gardener (Pedro) that they are Allamanda and that is what I thought they were. The pics could be better. I was attempting to photograph a huge black bee that was devouring the nectar.
Everyone else,
It was an unexpected step into a totally different culture. It took a few days to adjust to the "simpleness" of their existance. But after the initial culture shock, I explored every inch of the small town and spent some time in the foothills, lagoons and waters of Puerto. The Great Kissadee is their "backyard" bird along with the Cinnamon Hummers, Chestnut backed Chicadees, Rufous Backed Robins and Orchard Orioles. I saw them everyday. I have pictures, somewhere... Fortunately I have family that will live there part time at least, so I am sure I'll be back. We caught a "Carnival" Parade through the center of town one evening, the locals sure know how to celebrate!
I plan on starting some seeds this weekend, I'm finally feeling a little better! Thanks!
