by almost a week ahead of schedule...with the exception of a very northern sighting near the Texas/Oklahoma border in 2006. I didn't look at all the past years maps...just from 2005-2008...
All the other areas heading east...LA-Florida along the coast seems about the same though. It will be interesting to see if there will be future areas north that will also see them about a week earlier too...

We have gotten to the days that a sighting around here will be normal for their arrival. I would not be surprised to see a dot on the map any time now for southeast Alabama.

Dianne,

Hopefully you'll see one today!

I can't help but notice how for many areas, the Hummers are between 5-7 days ahead of schedule when I compare this year's map to previous years...

I made a slideshow comparison of 2008 with 2009. It has 4 images, dated every three days starting February 28, then followed by March 3rd, March 6th, and March 9th.

I've noticed in years past that migrations can go in fits and starts. It can seem way ahead, and then the weather changes and everything slows down, or vice versa.

I didn't look back over the previous years, but it looks like you're right, Susan Louise, about them being a few days ahead this year (at least when compared with the progress at this time last year). Sorry about the small maps. I really have to lean into the screen to see them. Photobucket won't let me make them bigger. If there are any techno folks out there who can make them bigger, feel free!

Hello Kristin,

Thanks for making the slideshow! I'm sure if it included the comparison for the current dates too, it would really show a difference. It's as if the hummers are definately moving at a faster rate this year. I'm sure, like you said, weather will slow them up a bit from time to time, but it might be possible, that If I do see a hummer in the Spring, it might be a month earlier that last year at this rate. Here in NE,looking at all the dates/sightings, it can vary that much...from mid-April-Mid May. I'm definately hoping for the mid-April this year...you might be lucky too! happy.gif
