Nectar guards

A while back I posted about some different bee guards I had seen in a local nursery. Today I had the occasion to go back to the nursery to pick up a plant tray so I stopped over at the bird supply section to get the name of these guards. They are called Nectar Guards and they are supplied by Droll Yankee. I did find them online http://www.backyardbirdsdiscoverycenter.com/DY-NGT.htm

Penny,

I am glad you started this thread. I am contemplating getting this for a hummzinger feeder that I bought. It's manufactured by droll yankees and I was wondering if it would with the hummzinger.

From what I have read they are supposed to come with all Droll Yankee feeders. You might want to contact them directly but from what I have read they should work with all of their feeders.

Penny, no big deal, but I can't click on the link and get to the bee guard. Is it because there's no space between the word "online" and the "http..."? If you edited a space in there, would it become clickable? There's nothing wrong with the link. I cut and pasted it and it worked fine.

Interesting little invention.

Here's that link:

Kristin there actually was a space there before the url code. I went back in and added a space again and it still showed up without a space so then I added two apaces. but thanks for copying and pasting the url in your post.

The same product is also available from the link below (Nottawa). I bought several things from them over the winter and found their prices and service to be good.

suchie if it is the same product as the one I saw here locally then their price is about half what our local nursery is selling them for.

Penny,

If you are getting it locally, then you don't have to pay for shipping.

They do sell several other products, like droll yankee feeders, aspects baffles for some of the lowest prices I have found on the web.

Well that is tru but I think those guards were 4.99 a package locally which I think is way overpriced.

Suchie, I'm not sure that they would work with the Hummzinger. I bought the Hummzinger bee guards, and they don't work with my Droll Yankees feeder, so I'm not sure the DY would work with the Hummzinger.

Hummzinger does make bee guards, though. They have them several places in my town.

Thanks Carol. I have been looking on the web for hummzinger bee guards similar to the DY ones and have not been able to locate them. Do you have an online source?

Since I don't get bees until at least mid summer I would like to know how these Nectar Guards work for those who try them before I try them.

Let us know how they work.

Thanks,Fran

Hummzingers don't need bee guards. They do have small insect guards that go on the inside of the feeding ports. I use them and they work perfectly. My hummers did NOT like them at first, though...I had to "train" them to use it by adding them one at a time. Actually, typing that here makes me realize that doesn't make sense either!...but it did work. And there are no insects of any kind on my feeders or in my nectar when I change it. Very handy little gizmos!
