I don't have any out yet, but will probably put out 2 or 3 in mid April or before if the hummingbirds make it to Wisconsin that early. Almost always see the first one the 1st week of May.
6 feeders out. I have this many in different areas so if I am outside working and a hummingbird visits I am likely to see him or her.
I was at Lowe's Wednesday afternoon and saw some saucer type feeders. I know many like the Hummzinger and this one looks much like the humminzinger. I started to buy a few of them and then stopped myself. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!
I have an empty one, leftover from the Rufous Hummingbird period. It occurred to me that it should be filled just this evening. An easy job for tomorrow.
If the weather looks good the big David Verity pot can be put outside along with the hardy Fuchsia and maybe Abutilon Voodoo and Little Imp. It is work dragging them in and out but worth the effort.

Different state, and slightly different zone, but it's the exact same situation for me, Lisa. I'm in zone 6A in southwestern PA, and don't have any feeders up yet. I'll keep my eye on the migration map, and probably put up either one or two little 50ml feeders in mid April.
Like you, mine show up the first week of May, but you never can tell. This year could be different. The very earliest ones usually show up in mid April in my local area, but so far I've not been blessed with such early arrivals.
I too have no feeders out but I might put one out within the next couple of weeks. I dont normally get one till the first of may. But this warm weather could change things this year.
I have six, will add one or two more when it starts to get busy.
I don't need that many to feed them it just helps to keep one hummer from taking over the yard.
I have seen one take over the front and back yard, he would sit way up on top of a fir tree and zoom done if another one came in, have a quick sip then go back up in the tree, with more feeders the other hummers can sneak in and get a drink when he is chasing another one out so eventually he will find it too much work guarding all the feeders and give up or what they will do is just guard one feeder.
I have been wondering about the sizes of there territories right now it could be large and as more hummers come in it shrinks down till eventually its one feeder and some flower pots on one side of the deck. Right now you see him zooming off into the distance so is he going to another house with feeders and guarding that house also then comes back to check here every once in awhile like a trapline.

I have 3 feeders but none are hummer feeders

Only 1 (the 2nd one broke) but I should add more...Martin made good sense. I'd love to have a larger hummer population hanging around, but the competition is a little to fierce. I used to hang 1 on the front of the house and 1 on the back, but the alpha male started sitting up high on the power lines out front...he could view the feeder in front & spot other hummers hanging around behind the house, so would go drive them off.

I've got 3 up, all being used by at least 2 male RTs and at least 1 female, although I think the female I saw this morning was different from the first one I saw the other day. She was fatter - don't tell her I said that!
I had two 8-oz feeders (I didn't want the 'juice' as we call it in our household) to get old and since we've always had just the two, thought that was plenty. Ha! I don't rightly know just how many we are feeding right now (hubby said he saw a literally hummer fight on the third feeder I put out the other day in the front on the porch; there were four of 'em all clamouring on the thing) but I swear, and I am NOT kidding you, they are going through all three 8-oz containers in under two days. I don't know if I am feeding every hummingbird in the neighborhood or what (or as hubby says, "They just like your juice mix, hon") but it is insane!
I may just have to buy a few more feeders. I have the regular ol' Perky Pet 8-oz glass feeder that has the little red floral things with yellow bee guards and the little footrests on the bottom.Nothing fancy at all. If there's a better feeder out there, let me know!
Well nothing at the moment but it sure has been tempting and I do think I just might have to put up my favorite perky pet four fountain feeder tomorrow! I know its early but hey.... how can I not? It is the first one they visit no matter what other feeder is up - I too love that feeder Sherry! Your pictures are great!

It is crazy, isn't it? In fact, the other afternoon, when I went to go and fill the 'juice' one of the little buggers started YELLING at me, right in my ear. Sheesh! It was like, "HEY! Can't you SEE there isn't anything LEFT woman?!" It isn't like I am at home all day long and can go out and fill those !@#$% things as soon as they are empty...LOL Try explaining the hummingbird yelling to someone and they think you're nuts. We feed Mockingbirds, too (haven't done it lately but will start up again soon) and THEY will come to the back sliding glass door and screech at me, too, when they want more mealworms.
My neighbor, just this morning, said, "You have a squirrel up there in that tree." Squirrel? Oh my gosh. We have doves laying eggs and raising their young in the backyard, hummingbirds fighting on the front porch, lizards hanging around the garage and in the trumpetvine... and now a squirrel? Goodness! Yes, we DO live in the middle of the city but you'd think we have our very own little nature park going. To think it all started with my butterfly garden...
I just bought a bag of sugar, but it's still too early to bother with feeders. I've had that, too, being scolded by waiting hummingbirds. "It's comin', it's comin', relax, relax," I say. Thank goodness the neighbors on that side are deaf, so they can't hear how looney I sound!
None!!! There's snow on the ground again. I was hoping this was over. I am greatful, however, that one was spotted in Southern Illinois. My time will come.
I LOVE your pictures, Sherry aka CalSherry aka Tdogmom!
Do you know what type of hummers are in your picture? They look like females of some type, but I know there are several varieties of hummers in California, like Allen's? or Anna's?
I'm so impressed that you've made your urban home a haven for wildlife!
