How is that possible...with winds fierce out of the north and northwest down through Texas all last night and all day today?

Call me kooky, but I don't believe these three sightings in Oklahoma happened today. I would need to "see" it on video, or from a camera with a date stamp in the corner. The winds were in the hummers' favor yesterday before the winds changed early evening on the 4th to the north and northwest. These winds have been sustained even stronger down in Oklahoma than here too!
My belief is that the sightings might have occured yesterday, but weren't reported to Lanny til today or something else.
Based upon the videos we have of hummers not even being able to hold themselves up and hang onto our feeders against 15-20 mph winds for much longer than about 30 seconds to a minute before being blown off, so, I can't imagine hummers flying into a head wind twice as strong for any length of time. They would have to hunker down somewhere for awhile til the winds were more favorable. DH and I have been keeping notes of this for our records...especially since we should hopefully be seeing one within about a couple of weeks.

Maybe those sightings really were on the 5th, but the birds had actually arrived days earlier, or whenever it was when the winds were more favorable. Maybe the people who reported them just didn't notice their presence until days after their first arrival. Maybe at least one of them got their dates mixed up.

I'm with you on the skepticism. It sure does seem unlikely they'd be making much northward progress into those crazy high winds. I think most birds just hunker down when they face those sorts of conditions.

Kristin,

Yes, you're probably right...
I would tend to believe that the hummers might have been in the area for at least a day or two prior to today and just wasn't recorded til now...

The winds here are still out of the N and NW...in the 30 mph range again...[linked image]
I'm getting tired of hearing the windows rattle day in and day out. We've had strong winds for several days in a row now. If I was one of our local/resident birds, I'd be going to the loony bin! [linked image]
