Thanks,

Hi, Matt!

I live in Tampa and have had 3 fly-bys this spring (03/22, 03/26, 04/07). I also have 3 feeders out, but I have yet to see any land to drink. I am adding more hummer plants to my yard to slow them down to stay for a spell -- I hope!

Good luck!
Julie

Hummingbird plants

April 14 2009, 9:15 PM

Hi Julie,
I'm going to be adding some more plants as well. Nan from Louisiana told me about some Cupheas that work well. She recommended Cuphea ignea 'David Verity', as well as Cuphea Schumannii. Hopefully they will attract some.
Thanks,

Hi Matt,
I've had a male and female here for at least a week. I'm in Jacksonville. I didn't see them today so they might have continued their journey. It was very amusing to watch these two. I only saw the male eat at the feeder and never saw the female eat from the feeders. She stayed in another part of the yard and enjoyed salvias. I've often wondered why hummers go from flower to flower when they could get all they need from the feeder, store up some energy and not work so hard... This is the first year I've had hummers this early. Last year it was late May. Suzanne

Hi Suzanne,
I recently purchase some Salvias from Lowe's. However, I haven't seen anything on them yet. They are a purple variety.
Thanks,

Hey Maryjane,
I see your one of the smart ones and left!!! I've been here all my life, but would sure like to move to Alabama. My people up there have hummers all through the summer. I've always thought Georgia was pretty country too. Thanks for the welcome.

Matt,
I learned from forum folks the particular salvias that are most attractive to hummers. Not only that but several members mailed seeds to me last year and this year I'm on the second generation of offspring. So you'll learn a lot hanging out here. Hope you get your hummers soon and welcome. You are in good company. Suzanne

[linked image] , Matt!!! Can't go wrong with 'Schumanii'. 'David Verity' got a little use but 'Schumanii' was one of the most used plants!! Illinois has been on the map early, too, so I put 1 feeder out in case but I don't expect them for a couple of weeks at best.

Joni,
Thanks for the advice. I hope to get those plants in the ground real soon. I thought about buying some of those red salvias that you see at Lowes or Home Depot. My aunt in Alabama has good luck with those.

I have had one visit for about a month now on a daily basis.  Right now the only things I have blooming are the honeysuckle, johnny walker low and bottlebrush tree.  Last year they were all over my salvia B&B.  Welcome!

Hi Matt
I've seen them this week using Firecracker grass, salvia coccinea, Bottlebrush Coralbean tree, Honeysuckle. It's probably the best way to attract them using plants.

Jana,
Right now we have petunia's and mexican petunia's blooming. Also, the hibiscus it trying to bloom. Then the penta's are blooming. I'm planning on purchasing some more flowers real soon. Hopefully I'll get some results from those.
Thanks,
