Nancy, congratulations on your first hummers! Is this about when you normally see them? It looks like they got close to
Lanny's in Fenton very early and then just stopped. I'm way north of you, but they should be here within the next two weeks.
Native columbine is nearly in bloom, maybe tomorrow, so I'm ready!

Laura,
We finished our house and moved here in 2004 thats when I started keeping track. In 05, 08, 09 the first one arrived on April 15th. One year a few days before, couple of years a few days later. So it is always around the middle of the month. I always put out my feeder as soon as the map shows the first one in Missouri, am always hopeful they will get here at the beginning of the month but so far no luck. Its always so hard to wait on the first, then by October I am ready for them to go. In beteen they sort of rule my life, as I live in a prime breeding area there are alot of hummers here, so its up at 5 am to put out the feeders before it gets light, then as soon as it gets dark, usually around 9 pm, bring them in so the racoons don't drain them dry. Just how far are you away from Warsaw?
Nancy, I am north and east of you, about 120 miles. Looks like about 50 miles north, though. Elsberry is north of St. Louis, on the Mississippi River, near the worst of the flooding last summer. I work in St. Charles, and a hummer was reported near there yesterday. As the hummingbird flies, it is about 20 miles from me. What's 20 miles?
I haven't lived here long, either. Just five years. I've been getting them 4/25 - 4/29 except for last year when they did not arrive until May. At any rate, they should be here soon.
You may not remember sending me seeds a couple of years ago and thanks to you my hummer garden is going strong. The lions tail continues to be a big hit and so easy to grow. I think you sent milkweed seeds, too, didn't you? They are also growing and awaiting a monarch. The cold killed the milkweed plants but they are coming back. In fact the cold blasted a lot of my plants. Congrats on seeing your hummers. My hummers thank you and so do I for all those seeds. Suzanne
