I am so excited! I just saw my first HB!!! I didn't want to try to take a pic, the little guy looked like he was enjoying his spot at the "bar" too much! I am about 5 or 6 days earlier than last years first sighting!!
Oops, this was one of my first posts, I forgot to click the signature box. Yes, I am from Shelby Twp. MI. I sure hope my little cutie stays! I don't even have any plants around for him yet. I'm going out with my mom this weekend to pick some up. Hopefully Telly's has the same plant I bought last year. I had superior luck with Cuphea 'magine'.
I am going to make up a nice pot for where we spend our weekends at our marina. Last year, I saw many HB's flying overhead when we were on Lake St. Clair in our boat. I could "Mother" more than one family, and the other wouldn't even know it;o)

Telly's has some great plants. None of our nurseries in my immediate area have much yet. I bought the only three good hummer plants that one nursery had a couple of weeks ago. I just came back from making the rounds again this morning but came home emply handed. There is another nursery not too far away that I need to check out on Thursday when I am in that area. One good plant I got at Telly's a couple of years ago was Salvia greggii Cherry Stampede. It has come back for me two years in a row now although it is late to sprout.

Good information Penny, I will check into the cherry stampede. I remember a lot of buzz on the forum last year about that plant. I've seen my little guy at the feeder four times, so i'm hoping he'll stay. Life is good!!!!

Cherie
THere are other Salvia greggiis that are hardier than the Stampede series. I d have to say that I planted mine in a protected area and mulched it well the first year. Last spring I moved it to a more open area where the soil drains very well and it was still root hardy but I would suggest the warmest location and extra wood or stone mulch for winter.

OMG! Cherie I just saw my first too. A beautiful male. yup definately earlier than last year. Whoo Hoo. Maybe this is the same little guy you saw this morning. I'm so excited. Oh and I just stopped at Telly's yesterday and picked up three cuphea plants. They only had about a dozen or so. But I just put my three out with a shrimp plant. Im glued to my window now.

This is so exciting to hear all the reports coming in for places similar to mine in climate--especially the ones that are earlier than usual. It gives me hope that one will soon be showing up for me. I keep hoping I'll see an April hummingbird, but I'm running out of time with only 2 more days to go in April. May 2nd is the earliest I've ever seen one here in southwestern PA.
