First Hummer of the year and my first ever adult male, what a thrill to see him! Last year I had only one juvie male, the rest all females. Also this sighting is 20 days earlier then last year, my first was on May 22...this was a very good day!
I can understand how you would get excited over that male. All hummingbirds are exciting to me, but those splendid little males with their glittering ruby throats are simply amazing.
I think this should be a more normal time for them to show up for you than May 22nd. As you attract more and more hummingbirds, you may find that they show up earlier next year. No guarantees, but late April to early May seems about right to me for your area.
Jeannine -- Congrats are definately in order! I wasnt aware we had someone on the forum from Rhode Island. Congrats on your first of the year and welcome .
Jeanine is a member but she just doesn't post very much. She is more of one of our shy lurkers. Maybe now she will join us and post a little more often.

Jeanine - Wow - I know you are happy with this sighting! Congratulations and here is hoping you will get more hummers soon! And usually we folks in the northeast can get hummers this time of the year early May so keep your eye out. Every year it seems they might visit you earlier than the last.
Thank you so much everyone! I orderd a Goldflame Honeysuckle for the arbor, it's sitting here waiting for the last frost so I can plant it. From what I've read on here the hummers like it!
I'm looking forward to the day it has flowers for them to enjoy!!
Jeanine,
Several of us have added a gold flame honeysuckle this year. I now have three honeysuckles. One I had to cut down to replace the trellis, the second is leafed out but no blooms yet and the new gold flame is still small so it will be a while before it blooms.

Isn't it wonderful when we see the first one?!? My first sighting was also a male and I haven't seen him since then. Al females now but I'll not complain; I'm just happy to have them back.
We look forward to hearing from you throughout the summer. Let us know when you see your first females.
