Has anyone grown:

Salvia 'Raspberry Delight' - Overwintered in 7?
Salvia Dorii - Hummers? I think I remember a thread on Dorii, or was it Darci?
Salvia pachyphylla 'Blue Flame' Hummers? Overwintered in 7?
Salvia 'Ultra Violet' Newer Hybrid but figured I'd ask.
Salvia 'Maraschino' Overwintered in 7?

All are from HCG http://www.highcountrygardens.com/cart/

I sit with $$$ burning hole in pocket.
I tried the search feature but it is time consuming.

Maraschino

May 4 2009, 6:51 PM

Pam,

I have over-wintered Salvia greggii "Maraschino" for several years now. I have them planted on the sunny south side of my house, 3 - 4 feet out from the foundation, in soil amended with a little sand for drainage and they do fine. I also have a few that survive out in the garden away from the house on the north side, in slightly raised beds.

The other 2 varieties that over-winter for me are "Furman's Red" and "San Carlos Festival". In fact, my "Furman's" (planted originally in 2006) has already started to flower.

I haven't been able to overwinter Maraschino in Zone 6b. But, I am trying it again this year because the hummers liked it when I had for the one year. I am also trying 'Ultra Violet' this year as a new addition. Will let you know how it does.

I ordered both Maraschino and 'Ultra Violet' from HCG this year and the plants were really nice and healthy.

Salvia pachyphylla was a major disappointment. No blooms at all. Salvia darcyi is a must-have for me. The screaming red flowers are hummer beacons. It roots very easily, so I saved cuttings over winter.

Raspberry Delight has been super hardy since it arrived 5 or 6 years ago. The first flowers should open in a few days. It is big, usually doesn't die to the ground and flowers especially heavily in June and July. I consider it superior to Maraschino because it flowers better in summer. You can always get Raspberry Delight cuttings from me, currently none of the plants have layered branches. A 2nd set of summer cuttings went in at Palmyra last July. They grew enough to survive the winter despite being constantly run over be vehicles.

Pachyphylla isn't really adapted to the east, our nights are too hot. One was put in the median at Palmyra a couple of years ago. It is still there and last year it put up a single flower spike.

Ultra Violet should work and I would love to see one in the state to get cuttings from - please.

Dorrii is like a small Pachyphylla and probably has the same drawbacks.

Several of the ones you took home with you a few weeks ago should be hardy for you.

Pam,
I have grown 'Raspberry Delight',Darci & 'Maraschino'. Don't overwinter here but can't do without them. 'Maraschino' was one of my most used plants last year & year before. Also bought 'Black Cherry'. Darci is a great red.
