YAY for you Penny!!! I can now stop holding my breath - am so excited for you. I had just hoped yours would be the next one! And he is perching - thats really good news - not just a sip and gone....
I kept thinking about you as they were appearing everywhere. It just had to be soon and now your day has finally come. You've been so gracious with everyone and their newly arriving hummingbirds, but I know it had to be killing you inside. Now you can breathe a sigh of relief and all is right with the world--except the part about not getting anything done . I know the feeling! I spent a whole day just videotaping and oohing and aaahing and getting nothing else done.
It was worth it. Feast your eyes and indulge yourself!
Thank you one and all.
This is 13 days earlier than last year and 3 days earlier than 2007
I don't know if he is actually sticking around. I haven't been able to really watch for him but I am keeping my fingers crossed. My sightings as so sporadic that it is hard to know from year to year when they will show up here so I am always a little zapprehensive.

Thank you Jeanine and Carol and Carol he may have moved on ... not sure maybe back over to your house. BTW, I just got home. I was driving down the blvd at the light to the Ellicot Creek bike path and a large coyote ran across the blvd. in front of me. I thin the widllife has decided to take back western NY. This is my third coyote siting.

I'm very pleased you've seen a hummer also! It's funny how I go every week with Nancy to try and catch hummingbirds, but when I see one in my own yard, it's a different feeling. It's magical! It makes you feel that all your hard work is paying off.
How about that Penny. Im so glad they finally showed up for you. Yes I know how you can get so wrapped in these guys and not get much else done . OK lets enjoy our hummer season.
Sandy hit the nail on the head...I do get very cranky when I have to wait so I can definitely und4erstand how everyone else feels when they wait and wait and wait. There are some years that I have waitied until the end of May before seeing or even hearing my first one. One year I actually took the feeders down and I put up a saucer bird feeder for the the other birds which was terra cotta orange and who should show up but a hummer to check it out. Needless to say that feeder went out in a flash. In ten years my hummers have not really been very consistant about their arrival times.

Well I haven't seen any sign of him since last evening. He may have moved on or he may be out looking for a friend. In any case if he is still in the neighborhood he knows where the feeders are located as well as a couple of blooming plants if he is so inclined.

My handsome little male was here Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, visiting constantly. After that many days I thought for sure he was here to stay, but yesterday I didn't see him at all. I don't know if he's continued north, or if he's still around, looking for the ladies, or scouting out other feeders. I haven't seen any females at all yet.
I'm hoping more will show up later in the month. It's been so dreary and soggy, maybe he went south again in search of warmth and sunshine!
To tell you the truth since I first announced the arrival of my first male I have seen very little of any males here. Maybe Ive seen him 3 or 4 times, but I seem to have a lot of female activity that is from time to time. Now is just not the time to get excited about it till around mid may when the action always seems to really pick up. As an example have not seen that first hummer today.

Just saw my first hummer [female] of the day and was perched on my new vine support little does it know that perch support is going to soon offer much more for their use.
Lisa
I had a coyote run right out in front of the care the other day in broad dayling right in the middle of a busy blvd and heavy traffic. He just about stopped traffic in all directions.

Hi Penny.. i was reading your post and doing a happy dance ..
and (while dancing) i was (still) wondering how Kristin, who is so close , saw her little hummies so long ago ..and we just do not seem to have seen any yet..
and i have been checking the little map and seeing all the little dots show up here in May..and
i was at my computer..rubbernecking ( while dancing ) to look out the window as i typed,, and
yep..
a little female.. just no more than four feet away..
ahhhhhh..
SPRING HAS FINALLY COME ( even if it is supposed to be 38 degrees on Monday)
Yes, i saw a coyote while i was driving your way the other day.. just standing along the road NFBlvd. Strange..very strange.
Penny - I just happened by chance to catch a very quick siting at 7:14 p.m. So don't give up - I have a feeling one will be by your place very soon!! Keeping my fingers crossed for you!
I think it makes sense I'd be a little earlier than you guys, on average. After all, I'm in southwestern PA, near Pittsburgh, and that's about 150 to 200 miles south of you. Still, doesn't seem like that should add up to more than a few days difference. Looks like this year it was about a week. Every year is different, and next year it could be me singing the blues while the hummingbirds are swirling around your yards in NY!
I think it's very good news that the females showed up here today--good news not only for me, but a good omen for you guys, too. Andrew in Ontario just saw his first male, so that bodes well, too. They are really starting to get settled around here, so it can't be much longer before they're all over the US and well into Canada.
Speaking of coyotes, give us all a yelp when your hummers show up!
Well I am reminding myself just like I told Susan Louise at least I provided the little guy food and shelter for the night so he could continue on his way.
