Also, planted Guarantica's, Subrotunda's, Nicotinia's, Agastaches and Yvonnes in the new bed. Waiting for my order from HCG's to fill in some more. This new bed has a lot of sand thanks to DH purchasing too much dirt for another project last year. It was excellant planting dirt and I just stole a hole bed full of leftovers! I didn't dig it into my clay, just did a sort of lasagna style and it is the only bed that isn't water logged, so I planted there and on the deck today. Thats where I put "the wild thing" and the other salvias from the Palmyra Plant sale. They haven't bloomed yet but are doing fine. Was nice to get outdoors again, although a bit cold. Hopefully Tomatoes are tomorrow. I have to make a dent in the plants I've sown. My tomatoes are NOT Heirloom, maybe next year, but they are stocky and leafy and look finnnnne!
Did I mention I found Tomatillo seeds at the Christmas tree shop in Freehold? Do you start your indoors? A bit late for that, thought I'd try in the veggie garden. Also got Cubanelle and a Hot pepper mix all from Mex-He-co, Ole!
Let me know about the Tomatillo's, I really want them this year.
Glad I got all my planting yesterday before all this rain today except for my tomato plants which I picked up last night and planted late today. Maybe someone can tell me if I screwed up. Last year my tomatoes didnt do well on the south side of house not enough sun i think so this year I moved them to where they will get sun most of the day. I read where if you dig a 12-18 inch square hole and mix 5lb of compost with the regular dirt and water consistant you dont even have to add any liquid fertilizer just let nature take its course. Anyway thats what I did along with putting newspaper down and mulch on top of that . Im curious to see what will happen.
When I checked the vegetable garden last evening I found that volunteer tomatillos were sprouting - at least a few dozen. It has probably been 20 years since they were last planted out there, they just keep reseeding. SALSA!
I always have lots of subrotunda seedlings. So far I am not seeing any but it is sill too cold here for them to sprout but I still have a gazillion in pots in the house and 54 of those still need to be individually repotted. I hate to think what is going to come out outside once they do sprout.

Guys I know that tomatoes is not what this thread is about but I have a few in the ground every year and I love my tomatoes. Cant remember where I read what I did in previous post but Im trying it and if it works well as described I will explain in more detail.
Ward, I had not been collecting and Salvia subrotunda seeds for several weeks because House Finches are working the plants over pretty well. However, I gave away the last of what I'd collected a few weeks ago, so I decided to see if I could collect just a little bit to have on hand. So, I clipped dead stems off 2 plants that were growing in places I had not put them and got a tablespoonful of seeds. At least 2 more plants ought to be harvested. There won't be any seeds during the heat of summer, but in fall, the plants go into overdrive. Love those weeds!

You are in the perfect place to just let subrotunda naturally do its thing. Up here we're always in a bit of a rush to get flowering. Partly because we want everything in place come the end of June and partly because we're impatient, rung out by a long winter and mindful that no season lasts forever.
Subrotunda and coccinea are great two punch plants. First the flowers for the hummingbirds and then as a bonus tremendous seed production for next years crop but also food summer goldfinches and winter sparrow. There is not a time of year when these two are not giving.
Yup, I also see quite a few Subrotunda volunteers in my garden. You know It's really amazing how they can survive 8 months in an area that has been dugged up and raked over again and again, barried in 3 feet of snow, and faced tempertures of -30ºC (-22ºF).....
