Yes the Rutgers Plant sale : Visions of gardeners lined up behind a caution tape, the staff cuts the tape with scissors and it's a mad scramble to the plants . A few years ago I watched as an older lady almost got trampled at the starting gate , It's like Black Friday for Gardeners !!
An exiting event -Hopefully things have gotten a little more civil !
This is where I bought 2 Red Buckeyes, Blue Muffin Viburnum, Cranberry Viburnum, and several other goodies thru the past few years. The sale seems to get bigger and more elaborate every year . I happen to be at Rutgers Gardens this evening ( I was birding - not peeking !) and saw them setting up , they do it at the Log Cabin in the back now.
One tip if you are going BRING A WHEELBARREL if you have a truck so you don't have to lug stuff around by hand ! I noticed they are selling Red Buckeye again this year .
The plant sale sounds fantastic. Any NJ residents looking for Red Buckeye and wanting to avoid the stampede, Rare Finds Nursery has some pretty big plants.
Hi Priya(Sarathy),
This is Suchie(also from Rutgers). Now, don't tell me I am wrong.
This is too much. I was so sure when you mentioned that you spent 6 years at Rutgers, now it turns out that there is another Priya S that spent 6 years there.
Plant sale was exhausting. I had to lug a plastic carry container all the way back to Timbuckto because I refused to bring me cart with me. I thought if I brought it, I would over spend. So I just balanced plants on my head all the way back to the car!
I came home with:
Spigelia marilandica (Indian Pink) for the hummers
Coreopsis verticillata Crème Brulee for the butterflies
Salvia Interupta Waverly for hummers
Salvia guaranitica Argentine Skies smells sooooo good
Impatiens Congo Cockatoo for ME! http://www.superstock.com/stock-photos-images/1566-085325 Very cool
Also a few cacti for me.
No one ran over me, it was pretty civilized, But there wasn't many volunteer helpers around like on a Saturday. If anyone needs Veggies, this is THE PLACE to go. They have EVERYTHING.
I was home by 11am and spent the day planting and digging and spreading compost. I am EXHAUSTED. NIght everyone!
Wow! Your area has a lot of plant sales! You certainly are doing a bang up business too...
I'll have to look into seeing if there are other plant sales around. Not that I need any more plants, it's just that I got accustomed to mainly going to our nurseries. It would be nice to see what other places I can go to next Spring. Going to the University's plant sale last month for the 1st time was a blast, even if I did go by myself!

Rutger's is a University also, I should have added that. I went to that one by myself, but there were plenty of like minded people around to share my joy with!! I'm considering joining a local gardening club....
