Salvia leucantha question

I found these salvias in the herb section next to pineapple sage, and came home with two small plants. Will they be happy in a large pot, or should they go in the ground? The tag said 'Salvia leucantha Mexican bush sage' so I hope it's the right one.

I never tried them in a pot. I plant them in the ground they bloom in August and September but are not hardy in zone 6 The hummers love them.

It is one I always grow in a pot - a big one. In October it makes its way around to the garage so it can be brought in when the weather turns ugly. In milder falls it can sometimes be kept going until Christmas and was the flag plant for one of the Rufous Hummingbirds. Where I was selling plants today leucantha was for sale - I didn't winter over last year's plants. A swap was done and now I have my plant.

You might consider pinching the growing tips now and again in another month. If pinched they can become quite bushy.

Priya,

You would need a very large pot. Unless you are considering trying to have a plant in bloom in say September/October for migration purposes. And intend to keep LUGGING a huge pot in and out of the garage, than I would put it in the garden and enjoy it for what it is, a large salvia with a large stalk. The stalk on the one I grew a few years ago, couldn't support the height of the plant and fell over and grew horizontally.
