Immediate Gratification!!

Yesterday we were gardening and I potted up some small blooming Salvia greggiis in some hanging baskets. As it's still early in the growing season here in Wisconsin, not much is really blooming right now (especially hummer plants). Anyhow, within five minutes, a beautiful male Ruby-throat was scoping out these new plants and he came down and visited them quite extensively. I have to say in all my years of hummingbird gardening that I've never seen such immediate use of a newly planted plant. We are having some fun now, especially after seeing both a female and male hummer yesterday (this is a big deal in our urban yard at the end of May!)

Hi Kathy, Cute story. I bet he was sitting in a tree, just waiting for you to get them potted. [linked image]

Kathi

A couple of years ago I had the same thing happen to me I had been to a nursery and picked up a greggii magenta with some blooms and dont you know almost immediately after I planted it a male who had been sitting in the tree watching me I guess just couldnt resist and dive bombed the plant. Pretty neat when that happens, isnt it.

Something like this just makes your day or year. It sure makes all the work worth while.

WOW! I should get some of that. Really having a hard time attracting them right now. I have a few annual salvias blooming and saw one female a week or so ago, but not much since.
