Ok now the chicken wire is up , if it was bunnies that ate half my cardinal climber vines then that should do it if it was something else, say cutworms its all for nil. I also replanted seed to try and fill in the vacant spots. I wonder if Im just destined not to have flowers from those vines. There is a giving up point.

Thanks for the advise Penny but I built the entire support so these guys could grow from the ground and make a wall of flowers, I havent given up just yet, although hummers may be gone from here by then.

Steve,

Even if it doesn't work out for you with that plant this year, you'll be ahead of the game when you plant it next year by being able to either pot it like Penny suggested or protect it as soon as you plant it.
That is one plant we can't grow here...the winds just rip it to shreds...[linked image]

You could grow scarlet runner beans instead. They grow fast.

Yes, scarlet runner beans even grow fast in my climate! They take awhile to get going, but then really take off. This year I'm growing a Korean long bean (another runner type) that has white flowers & I'm told the hummers like it even better than SRB...we'll see! I just got around to preparing the bed and planting them, altho they wouldn't have done much before now anyway. Oddly, their dried beans vary in color & markings. Some look just like the SRB seeds I've had, but some are solid black and others are solid pinkish purple. They are supposed to be very tasty bean when harvested young, in the pod.
