Window Feeders

I have a hummingbird feeder in my kitchen window, which I love. It's hanging though. I've never had any luck with the suction cups. No matter how strong they say they are they always fall. I've always followed the directions, clean the window first, etc. etc.--no luck. For my kitchen window I screwed a hook into the eaves and then hung the feeder from a basic 'S' hook. I use a Hummbrella with this to keep the ants away. This is also a sunny window, so it really helps with that too.

I want to put another feeder in my bedroom window and was planning on doing the same thing, although it wouldn't be quite as easy to do with that window. I saw the new (I think) Aspects Jewel Box Hummzinger Feeder and it looks great! It has a built in ant mote that completely surrounds the feeder. It really looks wonderful. Here's the link: http://www.nottawawildbirdsupply.com/aspects-jewel-box-hummingbird-feeder-p-525.html How do the rest of you feel about window feeders? How do you keep them from falling down?

Thanks,
Carol

I have had the same window feeder for about 4 years now. Never a problem getting it to stay in place.

Just outside the sliding patio doors, I ran a copper wire from the lites on both sides of door & tie the feeder on it.
Where do you get this "umbrella" for the feeder? In July & August it gets too much sun & I'm sure the water gets hot.

Patty,

The hummbrella is here: http://www.bestnest.com/bestnest/RTProduct.asp?SKU=ASP-275 I can't recommend it highly enough. The back of my house gets the hot afternoon sun. The feeder on that side of the house really needs this. It's just great. It's kind of expensive, but this is my third year with it and it looks brand new.

Diane,

Does your window feeder get full sun? I have wondered if that could be part of my problem. I've thought maybe the full sun just beats on it so much that it sort of cracks and pulls apart somehow.

Pretty much full sun. This late in the afternoon it is in the shade. This feeder stays out and ready all year round. If anyone is interested I will check to see if I still have the box with the company name on it. I ordered it and a saucer type off the internet.

Diane, it looks like it's a Heritage Farms feeder. They have green leaves like that on their regular hummingbird feeders. I'm enthralled with Aspects new feeder with the ant moat completely around the outside of the feeder. That's the one I would buy if I decide on a window feeder. It's interesting that yours is in full sun. That blows my theory!

I may try it one more time before I give up! I also thought I could put a shepard hook outside that window but not sure I really want to do that either.

Hi Carol! I cannot believe the prices on that website! That feeder even sells for $26 on Amazon! Thank you Matt!!! (and-you're welcome [linked image] )

Here's my take on window hangers/feeders. I had a window feeder 3 yrs ago, but gave it away, because for me it did not work. Every time I tried to put the feeder on the window attachment the sugarwater would spill a little and run down the window. Ants I do not want to attract! So I bought the hook Steve discussed in his thread from Walmart. But then I found one I liked the looks of better at Wild Birds Unlimited and purchased it. I hang the Hummzinger Minis on it. I put the hanger up the beginning of the season and take it down in October and it stays put no problem.

Diana, thanks for posting the pictures. The hook you bought at WBU is the one that I have. It worked on my kitchen window for quite a while but finally dropped, leaving a lot of sugar water on the deck for the ants to go after. The salesperson at the bird store swore that was the best hook she'd ever found, and it certainly seemed like it to me too. It eventually gave out on me though.

Still, I may try the new Aspects window feeder. I'm not sure. I'll probably end up just screwing another hook in the eave and doing it the same way as my kitchen window. I really want a feeder outside my bedroom window. I'm thinking there I'd sit there and read and look at the hummers at the same time. Maybe I shouldn't do it though. I'd probably get no reading done!

Hi Carol...how long did the WBU hook work for you? I would hate it if mine dropped too.
This is my second year with it. I like it alot even if I have to buy it new every few years [linked image]

Carol,

For what it's worth, I sometimes use a window-suction cup feeder (I have three or four kinds, but I prefer the Droll Yankees one best). I don't expect the suction to last all season though; I remove it every second or third time I clean and fill the feeder, just so I can clean the window again and make sure it sticks. I'm sure if I left it up for weeks or months, it would give out, but mine seem to handle it fine for a few weeks at a stretch.

Diane, it was just a few months before mine fell down, so it seems you did something right with yours!

Kevin, that's a really good idea to take it down and redo it. That's what I would need to do, too, I guess.

Diana, I couldn't believe the prices on that website either. I'm not sure I'd even come across it until Matt mentioned it. Now I have it bookmarked!

Carol-- I agree some of the feeders with suction cups dont work too well. Check out my post titled "window extender" that thing works great I never took off my window all winter long, snow or blow and it still on there has never come off, holds up to 5lbs of weight.
