Does this quote sound like you?

Today was our last day of school and, as usual, our principal gave us each an award pertaining to something we have done this year with a corresponding quotation. Because I had such a good time overseeing the second grade garden club, my quote was a Chinese proverb:

"When you have only two pennies left in the world, buy a loaf of bread with one, and a lily with the other."

Of course we would probably have substituted a black and blue salvia for the lily...

Here is last year's garden, since this year's has been slow to bloom due to our cold weather this spring:

Carol, I can relate to that with the B&B! Your school garden is lovely and it reminds me of the one that was starting in our local elementary school the year I retired. A great idea for the youngsters. Have any hummers found this spot?

Carol--- I remember this picture from last year, you were so proud of your students for getting the garden growing. Did they do all of this?

That is a lovely quote. I read a similar one, from Gulistan, when I was 10. I think it has unconsciously influenced a lot of things in my life.

"If of thy mortal goods thou art bereft,
And from thy slender store two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and with the dole
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul."

Wow! Both quotes are very profound. Thank you Carol and Priya! Yes Carol has seen hummers at the garden at school. I think this should be built into each school's curriculum.

Thanks for the kind comments.

Priya, I'm glad you added that quotation, it's really nice. I will share it with my principal.

When I get back to school at the end of the summer, I will hang a feeder and see if we can get the children to really see the hummingbirds- it's harder when you have to tell them which flower and I think the feeder will make it easier for the little kids.

Each second grader got to plant at least one or two plants ( we also put in a couple of flats of pansies). They especially liked watering the plants with watering cans and weeding with the weed hounds:

That kept a couple of kids busy while I could give the planters more attention. I wish they lived close enough to weed for me at home!
