Re: Red flowers

Wish I could tell you what they are but I have no clue. I grew them from seeds that I bought on a whim and only 2 plants survived to be planted. But grow they did and are obviously a perennial as this is the 3rd year they have come up. Each year they are bigger, the stalks up to 4 feet tall this year. The tiny flowers last forever, and when they die off I cut them back and the plant reblooms. The hummers sample them occasionally, but bees and butterflies love them. Someday I'll take a sample to a nursery and see if I can ID the plant.

I really enjoyed the slide show. I like that feeder with the red and white flowers instead of yellow.

Red flowers revealed!

July 2 2009, 6:19 PM

After being asked what the flowers in the pictures were, I decided to finally try and find out. I have been asked before, and long wondered, but could not remember the name. I wanted to check a few nurseries today, so I took a cutting of it with me. I stopped at a small place first, and didn't bother with the cutting, but when I walked in the gate, there on the very first shelf I saw was my flower! The name, which I remembered as soon as I saw it, is - RED VALERIAN. Its a very nice perennial, and I would recommend it for its looks, although I don't think its much of a hummer flower. The color may attract them though. Got five Bee Balm today, none of them flowering yet. They will make a nice background for my front garden.
