Gartenmeister Bonstedt Fuchsia

Just thought I would tell everyone how pleased I am with this pretty plant, that we put on the table right outside the window on the porch. The Cinnamon hummingbird has taken it over, with regular visits morning and night. Can't get a descent photo of them using it, as it too close!
It/they have decided on two new perches, one on a particular branch of a russelia equisetiformis and the other is right inside the porch, two foot from the front door on bare protruding branch of a Jasmine vine.

Hi [linked image] Patricia, That is really a nice image - a cinnamon hummer on the Gartenmeister! And oh perching on the Russelia...that must also be a pretty picture! Hope you are getting better every day and will soon be out and about! [linked image]

Hi Patricia,

I saw one at the local nursery today and just had to purchase it. Can you tell me what conditions you have yours in? Is it in a shaded area or full sun? How often do you water it? Thanks!

Nancy, due to our hot sun, I have it on a table, in the shade for most of the day. Water every few days. I gave one to a friend and she has hers on her patio, in the shade as well.
They are often seen here, so I don't know how they would perform in the ground. Once I get some cutting rooted, I will try some in the ground.

Sandra they can take full sun but not hot sun. In the cooler states a lot of people put them in full sun. Mine is in about half day sun. In hotter climates part to full shade is probably best. They tend to suffer in heat and humidity. They are very thirsty plants at least in pots and they like to be fertilized. In above average summers when whe actually have summer weather I tend to double pot mine so they don't dry out as quickly. Right now mine are in two gallon pots but need to be in bigger ones as even with the coller temps they dry out in a day.

Sandra, I have some of mine in deep shade without a lick of sunshine and they do great. The leaves stay greener in the shade compared to the ones I have that get a little mourning sun. So, it's a great plant if you need something pretty in a shady spot.

Thanks Penny and Sandy! I have the perfect spot under the trellis with filtered sun. One more question: how much space will it need at maturity? Height is not an issue but width might be as I'm planning on planting it right next to my fuchsia-flowering gooseberry which I also bought today.

The nursery also had a 'wendy's wish' salvia and a 'black bird' penstemon which were really nice!!! It was really hard to walk away. Somebody stop me please!!! [linked image]

Sandra since mine are in pots they probably aren't quite as full as they would be in the ground but one of mine is almost 2 ft. around. I am afraid we can't stop you getting plants. In fact we are enablers and if you stick around here you will probably end up with more plants than you have room for like the rest of us around here. I put more and more plants in posts because I just cant stop acquiring more plants either by seed, cuttings, plant swaps and purchases both online and locally. I don't sow for or 5 seeds on one particular plant I will sow 25 or 50 or more just to be sure that some germinate and then you guessed it they all germinate and I have to find homes for my little seedlings either in my garden or in other garde3ns. I tend to do the same thing with cuttings. One year I had 21 fucshia cutting rooted and no where to plant them so I filled up planter boxes and hanging baskets with them. No I am sorry Sandra we can't help you control the addiction. You will have to join in the 12 step program for plant addicts.
