Found this moth outside our door today when I got home from work. Live in eastern WA. Any ideas? It sure is cool looking!

Smerinthus cerisyi - One-eyed Sphinx Moth

September 2 2009, 9:01 AM

Jeff, Penny, Sandy - there are several sphinx moths that are very similar in appearance. I think that Jeff's find is actually a One-eyed Sphinx Moth (Smerinthus cerisyi) which has a range that includes the state of Washington. The range of the Virginia Creeper doesn't extend that far west. Take a close look at the markings on the wings to confirm. I've linked below to BugGuide.net for each species

I found this guy sitting on a firespike leaf a couple of weeks ago. I believe it's a Pandorus Sphinx Moth.

Last week, this Hummingbird Clearwing visited a plumbago while I was weeding the flower bed.
