September already! Here's what's blooming for me in zone 6A southwestern PA, plus kind of a summary for the whole season:

Everything marked with a "*" was used this year by hummingbirds. An asterisk in parentheses means I've seen it used in previous years but not this year. All of this comes with the disclaimer that just because I haven't seen it used, doesn't mean it wasn't!

*Zinnias
*Canna patens
Canna indica (an all red one)
*Ipomoea luteola (Hearts and Honey Vine)
*Ipomoea hederifolia 'Buttercup' Solid yellow
*Ipomoea hederifolia 'Pumpkin' Yellow with an orange outside and orange red ring in the center
*Ipomoea hederifolia--the orange red ones
*Ipomoea x multifida (Cardinal Climber)
(*)Ipomoea quamoclit (Cypress Vine)
*Salvia coccinea--the tall, wild type ones
*Salvia guaranitica 'Kobalt'
*Callibrachoa in purple
Cuphea 'David Verity'
(*)Cuphea micropetala--finally has come back into bloom after being demolished by browsing deer
Cuphea llavea
*Lobelia siphilitica--A few blooms still remaining at the top
*Ipomopsis 'Hummingbird Mix' Began blooming again
*Mimulus cardinalis--Lots of brown leaves and only a few flowers left
(*)Ruellia elegans--2 pots full, blooming nicely
Ruellia brevifolia--Going strong
Tithonia--Easily 7 feet tall and in full bloom. No activity noticed except by bees and butterflies
*Fuchsia 'Thalia' -- Similar to 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' but the leaves are green and the flowers are a paler shade of pinkish orange
*Fuchsia 'Gartenmeister Bonstedt' Finally blooming again after the deer chewed most of the blossoms off
*Lonicera sempervirens -- Putting out a few blooms right now, but was hurt badly by aphids this year.
*Manettia bicolor -- Non stop bloomer, loved by hummers
Impatiens walleriana
(*)Coleus
*Salvia greggii 'Pink Preference'
Torenia
*Silene regia -- I think I still have a few blooms left on the regular species form. I think 'Prairie Fire' is done
*Campsis radicans--A peachy yellow one, still putting out a few blooms

Done blooming:
(*)Delphinium exaltatum
Lilium 'Viva' Done long ago
Lilium superbum -- was finished back in July
*Heuchera sanguinea stopped probably a couple weeks ago, but may start again as temperatures cool
*Penstemon eatonii
Penstemon pinifolius
Penstemon smallii
(*)Aquilegia canadensis
*Bleeding Heart
Hollyhocks -- Pretty much done
*Monarda 'Jacob Kline'
*Monarda 'Dark Ponticum' Was investigated at least once by a juvie, but I think this is more of a bee and butterfly flower than a hummingbird flower.
Phlox divaricata

Haven't Bloomed:
Cat Whiskers -- I don't understand what happened with these. The plants look fine, the buds were forming weeks ago, but they seem to have aborted and I don't know why.
Brunfelsia nyctaginoides -- Lots of healthy leaves but still no blossoms. Was in morning sun, but I moved it into a sunnier area with afternoon sun. It looks fine in the brighter area, but still no blooms.
Dicliptera suberecta -- I don't know why but this plant has never bloomed this year, whereas I think it bloomed from midsummer onward last year. I blame the cooler than normal temperatures.

One of my Dicliptera suberecta plants has been blooming for several weeks. It is from a cutting from last year's plant. The one in the ground hasn't bloomed although it is much bushier than the one in the pot. Still waiting on Salvia reptans and Cuphea shumannii although I am not expecting any blooms on the Cuphea schumannii. My Dropmore Scarlet never recovered from the aphid attack but the Coral honeysuckle did and is going gangbusters

Here is what is currently in bloom as best I can recall off the top of my head without actually going outside to look around
Sal;via coccineas
Salvia guaraniticas including Black and Blue
Salvia darcyii
Salvia SL411
Salvia greggii Pink Perfection
Salvia greggii Furman's Red
Salvia greggii Stampede
Salvia greggii Wild Thing (scant blooms)
Salvia greggii Navaho Purple
Salvia Scarlet Spires
Salvia subrotunda
Salvia azurea
Tithonia
Lornicera sempervirens
Buddleia Royal Red
Cuphea ignea
Cuphea ignea David Verity
Cuphea micropetala
Lychnis Chalcedonica
Agastache cana Sonoran Sunset
Agastache rupestris
Agastache pringlei
Agastache Tutti Frutti
Agastache Double Bubblemint
Penstemon Elfin Pink
Scuttellaria Scooter Scarlet
Phlox paniculata
Cardinal Climber
Stachys coccinea
Lobelia cardinalis
Hamelia patens
Justicia brandegeana.

Kristin and Penny, With all those plants still in bloom, do you still have a number of HBs around your gardens?

Except for 2 HBs that I spied this a.m.. my HBs seem to have gone off on their trek south.

Monday we cleared out our bird and butterfly garden of various in ground and potted summer annuals such as the cleomes, etc. And we don't have the range of tropicals that your gardens feature so can't report on those.

We do still have beautiful zinnias that the HBs were checking out this past week, some Tithonia and Homestead Purple Verbenas of interest to them, and red flowered milkweeds they've been investigating.

I also have a tall and strong planting of Salvia 'Black & Blue' that they don't seem to care much about, and I thought that was a real HB ringer plant, but, Oh, well....

I'm making my list for next year from all of your reports, so thanks very much.

Judy
This was not a very good hummer year for me to start off with. I thing that many of the birds that have been in my yard in past years didn't return this year possibly victims of Hurrican Gustav last fall. Of the few that I have had this year at least one female had a successful nesting albeit a later nesting than usual I think. As of a couple of weeks ago I was seeing a couple of fledglings. A male is now sporting a new red feather at the throat and still showing a slight nest mark. I haven't had a chance to check out back in the last two days to see if my adult males are still around. I do think that one is gone but I did see the other more aggressive one doing his mid yard hover and corner to corner patrol on Tuesday. most of what I am seeing have learned to use feeders....even the saucere feeders. In fact the yount male with the one red feather prefers the saucer feeder to any of the others

My Black and Blue didn't get as much action this year which was a first for me. Every year since I first started with this plant it has been the number one attractor but then again none of my plants have gotten the action they have in past years.

Judy, I had a good, "hummerful" summer this year, but they seem to be mostly gone now. I was seeing them frequently just a week ago, and now, suddenly, there's very little. I can see that there is some tiny drop in the sugar water levels each day, so somebody must still be coming, but I haven't seen him, or her, or them. Last year, they straggled on almost into October, so this sudden disappearing act has taken me by surprise.

Look out southerners, they're on their way!

Thanks for all the details. I was just curious about how many HBs you have around at this date because there's very little point for me to order in rare flowers that bloom now if there aren't going to be HBs around anyway....

Maybe I should focus on plants that bloom in early and mid July and August for next year.

Oh, and do your birds prefer the saucer feeders or the jar types? It sounds like they like the jar types but I thought that the saucers were the ones to have...oh, well... (-: Thanks again. J.

Judy,
It is good to have plants that come into bloom early as well as a few that start a little late. I have my Salvia reptans and Salvia Azurea for late summer/ early fall blooms. The coral Honeysucle blooms off and on all year. Many of the salvia will bloom most of the summer up until frost.

This year I took down the bottle feeders and put my saucer feeders up early. Usually I use the saucer feeders later in the summer when the yellow jackets are the most active but I had one bottle feeder that was drawing the Yellow jackets quite a bit so I just removed it with the intention of putting it back up after a few days but the hummers took right to the saucer feeder so I left it. I do have another bottle feeder up across the yard but the saucer styled feeders and test tube feeders are getting most of the use this year.

I had to bring this thread back up because my tiny Russelia equisetiformis that I purchased from Susan at Sweet Nectar Nursery got its first bloom today! As little as it was I didn't expect to see anything that even resembled a bloom until next year. In fact it has been hanging in an out of the way spot and almost left to its own devices with just an occasional glance to see if it needed water. I didn't order it until July so had to take whatever was left and Susan did apologize for the size of the plant. I wasn't concerned since it was so late in the season anyway and figured that it would be a lot easier to overwinter a small plant. I am really thrilled that it has started to bloom!

All that was in bloom in August is still in bloom only more so. The Salvia greggii and microphylla have awoken from their mid summer doze and discovered life is sweet. A few still haven't recovered from last winter, but most are decked in bloom.
Planting so many Scarlet Spires was a mistake when it comes to garden navagation. A big tangle of them came sprawling in from both sides of the path and close it to traffic - but my god the flowers. There has hardly been a 10 minute period since early July up until this week that a hummingbird wasn't working those flowers. What I will do with them next year I don't know.

Like the rest of you my Cannas are peaking - the unknown named red variety is close to 10 feet tall now. There are two plantings of it out back - the neighors 30 foot row in the distance and mine of similar size. They match the red horse barn. Canna glauca Panache has expanded considerably and over-reached its listed height. It gray leaves and pink and yellow flowers give it a subtle beauty. Hummingbird gardens can have a circus quality, glauca proves adult supervision.

Russelia equisitiformis is in bloom moderately. It should be blooming heavily, it seems the gardener doesn't quite have the plant properly sited yet. This year's results tell me the plant is worth the effort.

It is just about time to start seed collecting and I should have taken more cuttings a month ago. August's cutting root so much better, but the month always gets frittered away deciding which plants will get propagated. Excuse me while I whack myself up side the head.

I also got behind doing cuttings this year with the off and on rain and cool weather I just didn't get around to doing any cuttings. This week we had summer but now it is cool again. The best I have done is to look at which plants I want to do cuttings of. I definitely want to continue with Scarlet Spires and of couse my greggiis and David Verity. I have a dozen C. schumannii in pots on the reclaimed rack on the deck ready to come inside along with my two Sinningia sellovii . If I get real busy this week end I might be able to get the cuttings done and then I can work a little more on the seed. My cannas stopped blooming for a while but have started again and S. greggii Wild Thing is finally starting to bloom with more than two or three blooms. Furman's Red has been non stop all season long.
