All gone

All of my regular summer visitors have moved on now. I am keeping one feeder up for an occasional passer by but I haven't had any sightings now for 4 days.

It was a wonderful season however so I have lots of memories to tide me over until next May when they usually appear here again.

I know how you feel. There was a hummingbird workshop near you last month. I really wanted to go but it was pouring rain so I didn't. Here is the link

So, that's eastern, south central, and now me from southwestern PA reporting in. Just between the three of us, we've got a good part of the state represented. It makes me wonder, do we have anyone in northeastern PA (Scranton, maybe?), north central (probably not since it's very rural, low population), or northwestern PA (Erie, perhaps?) among our members? I don't remember seeing anyone.

As I noted in another thread, I saw a single bird yesterday, late in the afternoon, after a 2-3 day lull of nothing. So far, nothing today, and I've been sitting outside quite a bit within view of flowers and feeders. It's too soon to say that they're completely gone, but we're getting close. I expect I may still see a few stragglers, but it saddens me to know that each sighting could easily be my last until probably early May of 2010. I have so far never seen an April hummer in western PA. I will keep the feeders up and keep an eye out for Rufous, especially, or any other odd hummingbirds. Rufous have shown up in western PA pretty often, and I'm hoping that one of these days I'll hit it lucky. I would be so excited!

I'm going to sit outside and work on making hummingbird feeders. The garden feels so empty without hummingbirds, but making feeders will fill me with hope for future seasons. [linked image]

Kristin I think there was someone from the Lehigh valley but I might be wrong. I don't recall anyone from Scranton Wasn't there someone from Williamsport? Maybe I am imaging it.

I saw quite a few hummingbirds yesterday when I came home from Church and the mushroom festival, but when I went outside they all vanished. I haven't seen one since. But maybe the next weather front that comes thru will bring some more your way and mine too.

As of 6:45 am this morning the 15th. there was one out back working over the honeysuckle. It was hard to tell but she looked like she was carrying a fair amount of fat.

I saw one around 5PM last night. I have a feeling your chubby guy and my late afternoon visitor are heading south today.

I was thinking the same thing Sarah. I sure wish I could hitch a ride because I am no where near ready for cold temps. It is just WAY TOO EARLY!

Charlotte

It certainly is a sad time of year and we hate to see them go but now we can start getting ready for next year, but as I say that I have another visitor just now land on my jewelbox feeder, which is a surprise that it is not on the first nature. I did not see a hummer yesterday. I have not given up on hummers this year as of yet.
