I kept one of my Black & Rouge going this year just to see what they would do the second year. For new members, the seeds came originally from my Salvia guaranitica Black and Blue but were red flowered. I am thinking now that they may not have crossed with Salvia coccinea but possibly with subrotunda It is over 5ft. tall this year. Last year it got just under 4ft. tall in a container. I am still debating whether to take cuttings of it to overwinter.

It was originally a sport from my Black & Blue so from seed there is not much telling what you would end up with as the seeds from this plant would probably cross with whatever was nearby. I haven't been able to check the big plant for seeds as it is in a spot behind everything else that I can't even get to now unless I go in there with a machete. That section has gotten completely overgrown thanks to all of the rain we have gotten this year. I wish it would come true from seed. I can tell you that last year when I had lots of hummers it was used constantly right down to the very last bloom at the end of the season. This year I don't know how much it was used.

Penny,
At the Baltimore herb festival, I noticed salvias from Putnam Hill nursery labeled Black and Rouge. They looked like lady in Red. I wonder if they were from you? I should have bought one.
HMMM that is very interesting Priya. Rich had some seeds so I wonder if maybe he passed them along???? I think he was at the Baltimore Herb Festival this year. I know he was there last year.

Stephen gave me some seeds from what Penny sent his a few years ago. To me it looks like a tall red coccinea, a nice one with dark flower stem and calyx. Rich seeds to think so too. My guess is that the coccinea genes have come to the fore after a few generations. It is very usefull among other tall plants and quite pretty.
Sandra
Yes the one Rich is selling is from me. I didn't realize that he had them for sale this year. I thought he may have dismissed it as just a common Salvia coccinea. I am glad to know that.

Oh, that is so wonderful Penny to know that you've created a new variety for us to enjoy even if it was just by accident. It should have your name in it, something like Penny's S. Black and Rouge. You should be famous!
I find this thread interesting because I've been meaning to post regarding my Black and Red Salvia. I've had a red Salvia coccinea with red flowers and black sepals in the yard for as long as I can remember. To my knowledge, we've not brought in any Salvia coccineas other than red ones and pink ones from a friends garden. I'm assuming the black ones grew from seeds from our original plants.
I couldn't find one of my best Black and Reds, hopefully I didn't thin them out too much, but I was able to find a number of my black/green and reds. Here are a couple of photos.
Steve
I did have a couple of pictures but I must have deleted them as I can't seem to find them now. Mine had the dark stems and calyxes and red flowers. You never know what you may end up with when you gorw plants from seed.

Penny I believe I have a few of your B&R's again this year, or a volunteer that looks and acts the same. i will take a few photos and we can make sure. They have jumbo sized red blooms and grow larger than most coccineas.
Stephen yes my blooms are larger also on the plant out back. My leaves apear to be different from Steves also if I am seeing correctly. I think some of mine have dark veining in the leaves. I will have to double check tomorrow. I did a little hacking in the back so I can try and get back there.

I must have deliberately collected them from the ones Stephen provided in 2008. They are blacker stemmed than what Steve photographed. Sometime in the next month I will take some seeds from the best of the little patch.
I just checked mine before sundown, the calyxes are definitely darkish almost black . I will try to take pics tomorrow, I was busy rounding up the houseplants. I hate shocking them by taking them inside too late in the year.
Is this what they look like? I noticed this plant in my garden looked different yesterday. It was slow starting(like most this year) and I almost gave up on it as I has sowed plenty of LIR and it was an extra that wasn't sold. B&B is behind it. I would have to check my pics to see where I planted LIR last year and what surrounded it if this is indeed like your B&R.
That could be it Pam. My plant is also very woody. Its funny because I cut the main plant all the way back and let one of the cutting that I had rooted in the same pot take off but the main plant took off too and that is the one that is over 5ft. tall. I had it planted next to an old cheapo $5.00 arbor and the cardinal climber migrated from the arbor to the Black and rouge and once it reached the top of the black and rouge migrated back to the arbor.
