Early this morning I spied another youngster on my jewelbox feeder. The surprise not being only another hummer, but that it would choose the jewelbox[and not one of the first natures] which is on my window where I am nearly always there. Did not notice a hummer yesterday does not mean I didnt have one. Maybe my season isnt over just yet.

Steve, That's encouraging!

It's nice that you still have them coming through. I just looked at the map to find Martinsville because someone on another thread made the comment that you were located in a HB hotbed and I see you have a big State Forest on the edge of town and maybe that accounts for your busy HB habitat?

Can you tell I am totally amazed at your big HB population? And I'm trying to figure out what it is exactly that makes your 'location' so hospitable to them (besides all your lovely HB plants, that is)! J.

Looking at the overhead view of the terrain @ google maps, it appears the southwest quadrant of Indiana is more heavily forested than many other parts of the midwest. Around here it's all farmland with forest pretty much limited to the river valleys.

Judy

IM not sure either why I get more than my share here where I live as it is mainly farmland directly around me. Actually there are two sizable forests one on each end of town, bradford woods and morgan-monroe state forest then 20mi further south there is a very hilly forested area around monroe reservoir. Does all this account for the activity I experience, I dont know , maybe. I only live 30 mi south of indianapolis which is very flat. There are no groves of trees very close to me either, not within 2mi. So it is just as confusing to me as it is to you and others on this forum. It is true that extreme southern indiana has some very hilly areas where my father grew up, but I am 150mi from that area.

I know its very hilly in the cincy area so I would think you could have loads of hummers in your area.
