They're still passing through southwestern PA...

I'm pleased to say that I had a regular visitor today. I have only one feeder up, and I don't think it's been used in days. This little guy was a fairly regular visitor to my Ipomoea coccineas, both the yellow and the red/orange flowered ones. I also caught him dipping into my Cuphea micropetala, but didn't get a picture.

He likes the yellow ones, too...

This morning I saw a migrator, it only went to the Cardinal Climber which is blooming heavy. This is my first hummer sighting in 6 days.

Andrew,
I have a fresh feeder and cardinal climber blooming among other things so you can nudge him or her my way!

I hadn't seen one for 6 days until this little guy showed up. I haven't been out much today, so I don't know if he's still coming or not.

Well, I have another one! so that's two today which is what I had last year at this time. And finally one of them is using the feeder. There is hardly any wind today, so I think these are fairly local. Kristin you are 200 miles directly south of me, you may have more in a couple days. And how is the canna patens collecting going?

Update
Now I have three LOL. Where the heck did they all of a sudden come from?! Now is when all that hard work
pays off for sure.

I think those visitors are exciting.  I don't think I've seen one since Monday the 21st. I still have feeders up and a few hummer blooms so they'll be welcome if they stop by. And there are big stands of jewelweed all over the place for them.

I spoke too soon! About an hour after my post I saw a hummingbird at my feeder. Lovely and sleek looking.

Andrew, I have a bunch of Canna patens seeds, now. Things are settling down, too, so I might actually have time to pack some up and send them off. Check the Seed Exchange forum, where I just posted. Anyone who hasn't recently emailed me should send me a mailing address where they want me to send the seeds.

It's great to hear there are still some hummingbirds to my north!

Hello Kristin,

Lovely pics!!! glad to see you and others still getting migrants. Our count of migrants so far has reached 29. Last year the total was 31. It's looking good that we will surpass last year's count. We don't want to jinx ourselves though by counting our chickens before that hatch so to speak, but we have until the 9th of October to just have 2 more to tie and 3 to surpass 2008's count.

Saw another one today in the back yard, feeding from a wild alien honeysuckle vine.

Glad to hear you're still getting them, Susan Louise, and I hope you break your record. Now if you could only get some of them to stay.

Wouldn't it be cool to know where they're coming from? It's tempting to say that the late ones are from Canada, but maybe it's the reverse. Maybe the Canadian ones leave earlier and pass through sooner, and the later ones are birds from just a bit north. I guess no one really knows.

Hello Kristin,

Yes, I agree! It would be thrilling to see where they each came from!!! We try and take close enough pics to be able to see if any are wearing bands too. I think they arrive by how far they are from us...say northern Canada, and then southern Canada, South Dakota, North Dakota...and then from places just north of us in Nebraska. I'm sure we get migrants that may come down from places like Minnesota and Iowa too...and the weather/winds surely play a role in where they wind up sometimes too.
There has been hundreds of times I wished I could know where they came from...
Too bad we didn't understand the sweet twitter of their language happy.gif

Yes, It would be so fun to know where they came from and where they're headed!

We have had steady visitors at our feeders and plants. Three this morning.

Our red ipomiea is blooming nicely, as are the tithonia, zinnias, hardy geraniums, buddlieas and also the salvia b & b. We have three feeders in operation.

We also had a nice family of monarchs in the garden this week.

I can tell that my feeder got used today because the level was noticeably lower. I think it was either one very hungry bird, or more likely, two. I didn't have time to go outside and watch so I only saw that one through the back window at the honeysuckle.
