A semaphoring little arrow he is! Stretching out his neck like a crane, with his stripe for slenderizing vertical emphasis. Oh, my.

That is really great footage! I think that is the best that I have seen as it shows clearly both the male and female. I'm going to make that my target bird for 2011, dreams don't cost anything.

That is for sure the most amazing hummer - the beautiful Marvelous Spatulletail (sp?)! One of the birds I would just love to see for real...The photography of this is superb - thanks for sharing it Steve.

Great display! Poor guy, she didn't look all that impressed, but I was!!

"It's a poor area(Peru). The kids, instead of playing Nintendo DS's, they'd shoot hummingbirds with catapults," explains Mrs Waldron.

"But now they've realized they can make a bit of money from tourists, it's completely changed the culture. If any of the kids get caught with a sling shot they get teased by the other kids."

TEASED??? They ought to get jailed! What a shame, harming and selling is prevalent in many poor areas where all types of birds were captured and sold (yes to the US). Parrots were/are notorious victims of poachers.

Amazing footage of a beautifull bird . He is both blessed and handicapped by his appendages. Since its hard for him to fly much its a wonder he survives. Also even though the female seemed curious about his display, wasnt all that impressed.

I just read in the American Bird Conservancy's newsletter, 'Bird Calls', that it is an endangered species and only .01% of its habitat is protected. Let's hope more habitat gets proteced before it's too late.
