Seeing your photo immediately brought a memory to my mind ...
This year, one of the teachers I've known since my daughter was in his class, died a few months ago unexpectedly. When my daughter was in his class, he had found a baby possum and raised it. The mother had been hit by a car. He was great at teaching science and he loved nature. He would bring the baby to school and it would stay in his shirt pocket or nestle up under his chin. (He had a beard.) It was the cutest little thing and it continued to be hand-raised by him until it was old enough to be released. It hung around his house even afterwards. This same teacher had a snapping turtle that he would hand feed. The turtle would jump out of the water to get food from his hand. And he had scrub jays that would land on him at his home and at the school. The animals seem to follow him everywhere. We were all so sad to hear of his passing. He was a great friend to all the wildlife and engaged all his students with a love of nature.
