Response to Vet wants follow up on Ralphie, please help

i know you kinda already decided what to do but i wanted to voice my input for you. i work as a veterinarian technician and we do see some eye problems, though we do end up referring certain patients to an ophthalmologist depending. i don't know what is going on with ralph and the eyes are just tricking things anyway, nor am i qualified to rec. anything on diagnosis, but if you feel that you need to monitor the condition go ahead. i would watch it close-once the eye is at a certain point you can't go back and he could lose it. this is usually ok for pets, they adapt just fine, but the surgery is costly! i was going to see if there were any other practices around that could give a second opinion? or a vet school that had a teaching clinic nearby-they have good rates sometimes. my clinic does actually try to consider the client's pocketbook in mind when we provide care, we don't just jump into a ton of tests and so on to "be on the safe side" unless the owner says do everything! i understand that many places are not like this, especially specialists. if you can you might try to get some pet insurance for ralph, it could save some later on. i can't say whether or not i feel that you made the right decision because i know nothing about what is going on, but you see ralph each day and know him best, plus i have no doubt whatsoever that you have his best interest in mind-at long as you can manage it. just watch him closely and i hope everything goes well for you both!
