I am not sure if I have rosacea or some type of skin reaction when in the sun for extended periods. It's slightly frustrating. It started back one day when I was out in the sun working. I ended up itching badly and soon my arms were rashy looking. My face also had the same type of "rash". I had gone behind a big Azalea bush to turn on a water hose and thought maybe it was the plant on my skin that caused it. I took an antihistamine which helped calm the itching. My face however, has continued to flare from time to time, never really totally clearing. The other day I was working in my Mom's yard. I was out there for hours, and even though I wore sunblock, I still had a reaction. My arms were bad for a few days. While they are not as red now, I can still see the slightly raised areas on the skin. My face feels rough almost. It is like it has raised spots, redness... I am using the Sea Buckthorn oil on it. It is supposed to be anti-inflammatory. I am just not sure if what I have is rosacea or if it's something else related to the sun. I don't usually burn, have always tanned easily, so this is quite frustrating to not even be able to work outside without having this reaction. Just thought if anyone was familiar they might be able to tell me if this sounds like rosacea or something else. Oh yes, one more thing. Where my arms were bent while working, there is no redness or rash, as if the sun did not touch there, so no reaction.

I don't think it is a reaction to the sunblock because the first time it happened I wasn't wearing any. The second time I was wearing mineral make up that had a SPF 15. Then I got some Aubrey Organics sunscreen that is supposed to work on sensitive skin, but it still happened. I don't see a connection between anything other than sun exposure really, whether I wear sunblock or not. I think it is worse without the sunblock, but it's still not "good" even with the sunblock.

I thought of something else! You're working outside, right? Are you working with plants by any chance, and are there many weeds or wild plants around?
There is a small group of plants, of various types, that cause a condition called phytophotodermatitis. One is wild parsnip. If you brush against this plant and then expose your skin to sunlight, the area the plant touched reddens, looking and feeling like a sunburn. The extraordinary thing about this is that the redness can remain for months.
It would be pretty easy to walk into a plant like this.
But oh, that probably isn't very likely at all, considering the circumstances. I think I got a little carried away; I get so excited about plants.
The only plant I can remember really getting on me was...

An Azalea bush. I don't know if that would cause a reaction or not? Thanks for your thoughts...

I know it sounds weird, but I get them too. It's usually because a nutrient is missing in your diet. I've started taking a small iodine supplement, and found the problem has nearly disappeared.
Hairy facts of life - 26" long, type 2aCiii

I wouldn't think it would be that, since I even take supplements, but you never know! I'll have to see. Maybe I need a little something more!

I am prone to rosacea. The sun does not affect it. It is what I eat internally that affects it. I can not eat spicey foods, nor can I drink hard liquers. Your condition sounds like a reaction to something and the sun just enhanced it. Might be the plants that you are working around.

that some people are affected not only by direct sun, but by heat as well. It's all in what triggers it for each person. I read about the spicy food too. I'm sure it's hard to sort through everything, especially if there are multiple triggers.
Thanks for your thoughts!

My mother has rosacea and it just makes her cheeks red.
If she eats chocolate it makes it flare up.
She got sunburned Quite badly one day, and then she got a bacterial infection, and started putting the prescribed antibactierial gel on, and it looks like it cleared up the rosacea too.
What you described DOES NOT sound like rosacea.
