I feel the same way about my 4 legged fur children. I've had animals all my life and would do anything for them.
I had a couple of cats (Spooky and Squeely) when I was a teen that had kidney problems too. I remember having to give them pills about the size of a football every day. Anyway, the vet told us back then that you need to be careful of the ash content in the food you feed kitties. The lower the ash content the better. The vet recommended less than 4%, but less than 3% was even better. It is indicated on the cat food labels. Your vet may have already compensated for that in the food he has recommended for Meowler (I love that name!).
I wish I could provide you with info on Meowler pulling his fur out. There must be some sort of irritation that makes him want to do this. Is there any kitty wipes at a pet store that might be soothing for him?
The only other recommendation I can think of (and I am sure you are already doing) is giving him plenty of love and attention.
I pray things go well for you and your fur kids.
