Leah  (Login LeahHays)

My brother has just been diagnosed with the beginning stages of kidney failure. Unfortunately, it is due to years of him not taking care of his type 1 diabetes. The doctors have put him on some sort of medication to help him. If things were not complicated enough, he had to close his business down about 6 months ago because of the recession: no work led to no money. His business partner even skipped out on him with things were getting tough. My DB then closed up the business and moved in with my mom. He has no money and no insurance. I knew that his health was not good and was able to find out from a co-worker of a state hospital that he can go to for the uninsured. Thank God he went. If he had waited any longer things would be worse. Our family is not rich by any means, especially since the recession hit us a bit hard.

In any case, I pray that God helps out my brother.

Thanks!

I am so sorry. Wow. I will absolutely pray for your brother and his illness and for the financial aspect of all of it. My grandfather had type 1 diabetes and some kidney trouble. I hope things get easier.

Hi Leah

I will most certainly pray for your brother. Type one diabetes is a hard thing to live with. It often leads to many complications no mater how careful you are. I hope the doctors are able to help him.

The doctors are monitoring him very closely and have given him a specific diet to follow as well. Although, he will never be the same again, we are hoping that the medications will help.

Oh Leah

October 17 2009, 11:29 PM

that must be a concern. Do you know what kind of treatment they are looking at?

In the past year two friends (they're brothers) have had kidney transplants. One had been on dialysis for several years. One is doing really well, the other has other health complications that has slowed his recovery, but it's great to see them living normal lives again.

I hope your brother can be treated.

Starting length 25"/62.5cm
Current length 36"/90cm (Original goal and was reached July 2009)
New Goal 44"/112cm

Current routine: (Trying to keep it as simple as possible): WC on the weekend; scalp washes every second day; oiling 2-3 nights per week; S&D when I think of it; and dusting every 8-12 weeks.

Shampoo: Organic Instincts diluted with herbal tea (rosemary and chamomile).

The doctors have prescribed him pills right now and a special diet. They have also increased his insulin intake. They want him eating 6 times a day. My brother just found out about everything this past Friday. The docs are hoping that the pills and diet will work. They will be monitoring him closely to see how this goes.

insurance

October 19 2009, 5:07 AM

Have you looked into state-sponsored medical insurance? We're in California and were able to get Medi-Cal (different from Medicare, which is for the elderly) when my hubby got laid off earlier this year. They have great coverage, esp for people who are in dire straits & can't afford insurance on their own. You may have to do a little digging for info, but going to your county social services office is probably a good place to start.

hugs & prayers

Alternating HO (honey only washes) and Burt's Bees Raspberry & Brazil Nut S&C, usually about 4-5 days between washes.

Luxury treatment: soak my hair overnight in Burt's Bees Avocado treatment & jojoba, sometimes honey as well, covered in a shower cap as I sleep. Rinse thoroughly in the morning, followed by a HO if I feel like it. a-m-a-z-i-n-g

HobaCare jojoba after washing & as needed to moisturize, EVOO if my hair is especially dry (which it has been lately)

I asked my brother and he said that he did apply for medi-cal there at the hospital. So, that is good. He is pretty savy with the internet so I will have him looking into social services for himself. With other complications in his health that the doctors are also worried about, he maybe a candidate for disability.
