Vees Clinch Second Place
February 7th 2008

The Kingston KIMCO Voyageurs officially clinched second place and the final first round playoff bye, with a 4-2 win over the Cobourg Cougars on Thursday night.

The Vees still have an out-side chance at finishing in first place, but they would have to win their final two games and have the first place Wellington Dukes drop one of their final two contests.

“I thought we played pretty well tonight. Early on I thought we were working hard, but just not seeing any results, but we stuck with it and got the win we needed,” said Head Coach Evan Robinson. “This was our first round series clincher tonight,” concluded Robinson.

The Cougars opened the scoring on a power play when Nicholas Diachenko tipped a deflection past Vees starter Mackenzie Ball.

Anthony Geldart missed wired a one time pass off the goal post midway through the period and then while killing a penalty, Geldart sprung Brett Jendra in on a clean cut breakaway, but Jendra was robbed with a nice pad save by Cougars goaltender Troy Webster.

Cole Weedmark then stripped a Cougars defenseman in the dying seconds of the period and also skated in on a breakaway, but he too was turned aside by Webster.

The Vees continued to pressure the Cougars net, but continued to have a hard time solving Webster. Lawton McCracken then fired an awkward shot through traffic, that sailed over the shoulder of Ball to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

The Vees finally broke the goose egg midway through the second period, when Mitch Latchford made a nice pass to Josh Dadic in front of the net and Dadic wasted no time getting the puck up and over Webster to cut the lead in half.

28 seconds later Brandon Perry took the puck to the net and Mike Moreau was able to jam home the rebound and pull the Vees even.

Before the period ended, James Cameron gave the Vees the lead, when he fired an absolute gem of a shot off the cross bar and in.

Jendra then tallied for the Vees early in the third period, when his shot fooled Webster to give the Vees a 4-2 lead, which would hold up for the remainder of the night.

Brandon Perry was the Vees first with a two point night and an absolutely dominant performance in the face-off circle. Mackenzie Ball was the second star stopping 33 of 35 shots and James Cameron was the third star with a goal and some big body checks.

The Vees will travel to Peterborough Friday night to tangle with the Stars. Game time from the Evinrude Centre is at 7:30PM.
