What a game.

February 15 2008, 11:02 PM

Dixie came out played extremely hard giving the Waxers one heck of a run. Game started out really chippy early with Dixie trying to be physical, but in my eyes ended up taking cheap shots and what made it worse is the ref did not call the first 2 or 3, which led to it being chippy all game. Lots of borderline hits and cheap shots from both sides and the ref was oblivious to it most of the night. I believe in letting the boys play, but there is a line where it comes close to players getting seriously injured. Ref stole a bit of the show, but what can you do.

Dixie played a game where they were strong on the boards and were winning most of the battles at the line. They were also having success catching the Waxers pinching which led to some great break chance for them. They played like the team that many thought they would be all season and I think it really surprised the Waxers. In the end though the Waxers put their heads down and charged right back and seemed to refuse to lose no matter what happened. Both goalies were excellent, but Rank came up with the bigger saves all night keeping the waxers in it during their lacklustre and period.

I don't expect tomorrow to be as close of a contest. I could be dead wrong, but I think the Waxers will come out firing on all cylinders and Dixie will have a bit of a hang over after this loss. Even if Dixie comes out hard I still feel that a Waxer team firing on all cylinders will beat them by 2 goals.

In the end it was one heck of a game to start the postseason off for the Waxers.

I agree. Kozie did a HORRIBLE job! He called 27 infractions (2 in OT) for stupid little nothing calls (Slash and a trip in OT!) meanwhile missing some pretty obvious penalties where players could have been injured and just turns a blind eye. For the amount of calls he made he had NO control over the game and if he wasn't blowing the whistle every ten seconds it'd be hard to think a ref was actually watching that game.
But at the end of the night, the Waxers turned it on part way through the third and took the win. Dixie played EXCELLENT - a lot better than I had assumed they would. I think Dixie is going to come out on all cylinders again tomorrow night because of how close this one was, but I think it was a wake up call for Markham to step it up in the first tomorrow instead of the third.
Sorry I missed you MattyB, like I said, missed the second period and then had to duck out right after the OT goal.... monday night I'll be there.

BTW - I give the goaltending edge to Hogan, like I said I missed seeing two of the goals but he turned away 43 of 48 (40% of those in the third) for a .896 whereas Rank stopped 21 of 25 for a .840

You did not want me as company tonight. I got a little excited watching the game.

To be honest I can not remember one big stop that Hogan made (yes I know there is bias in the blue glasses I wear), but I do remember him making a lot of the puck in the crest type saves. No major glove saves or pad saves. Maybe he's so good that it just looks that effortless.

Excellent game report, Matty. Almost as good as being there. Seems the Waxers were surprised by the fury of the Beehives. But, in the end, the Waxers found a way to make their own bees wax .

A lot of people thought this would be an easy run for the Waxers. Not so last night.

It is ok not be the hospitable host for Nutmeg . The playoffs do tend to get us a little wound up and excited as you call it. Nutmeg understands that all too well.

In fact, that is why I prefer to sit by myself. When the playoffs roll around, I can yell all I want without offending the ears of a friend sitting next to me.

Problem is, often it is hard to find a place off by yourself when the playoffs roll around. Unlike the regular season, the games are generally well attended.

Keep the game reports coming from Waxerville.

Well if I had been there for the entire game (or seen you with more than 10 minutes remaining) - I probably would have made my way over. After the week I've had, I'm sure nothing you could have said or done would have made an impact haha.
I will be in attendance on Monday (first and third periods again) and I believe CSTR will be there for the entire game - you two can scream in unison.
