Thank you to the Bowmanville Eagles for a well played game and showing your young fans what class and composure are all about. It is very difficult to hold it together when you have the likes of # 21 butt ending you before the puck has even dropped at the face off. The " Stars " put on a horrid display (not the ref as suggested by Matty B) that I feel is almost an embarassment to their coaching staff.
Keep up the good work Eagles !

Take your shaded glasses off and you might have seen some of those horrid calls in the last 4 minutes of the game. Jank made 3 calls that were not penalties and clearly your too bias to admit it. I never once stated the Stars were darlings and also gave Bowmanville credit for holding their composure. However, the way you protray the Stars is pretty damn funny. The game was very clean, but stuff was happening behind the play and it wasn't always those "dirty" stars doing the deeds.

You're the one with the "rose colored glasses". The Stars did not play their usual tight well disciplined game............they played like a bunch of sore losers. A disgusting display!

Protest?

February 18 2008, 4:40 PM

I heard Peterborough is protesting the first game of the series because of the delay of game penalty with less then 2 minutes left in the game. Peterborough I heard is stating it should have been a penalty shot.

If the protest is successful Would Peterborough be awarded a penalty shot then they replay rest of the game and overtime until there is a winner. Or would Peterborough get the win and then the series would be tied 1 - 1 ?

The only time a team would automatically get the win, is if the opposition iced an illegal/ineleigible player.

Otherwise, the game would have to be re-started from the point of protest.

Don't hold your breath on the protest though. It is unlikely the OHA will make one of its' referee's look bad by overturning his call.

Is the protest just that it was a Delay of Game penalty, or was it through illegal substitution? ie: too many men on the ice.?

Like I said, don't look for the ruling to be overturned.

Pepsi

Heard at the rink in Port Hope that Peterborough has won the appeal and now the series is tied 1 game to 1.

Really sucks for Bowmanville Fans but great for Peterborough Fans.

Looks like both quarter final series games are now one game apiece.

That will make a lot of hockey over this coming week. When does round one have to be over?

Re: Congratulations Eagles

You caught me. I am a big Peterborough supporter, so much so that I have not seen the team play since they were the Junior B version? and named the Pete's. Actually that brings back some funny memories.

The frustration leaked out after those 4 calls were made and there was only 15 seconds left. What you describe as "disgusting" was some pushing and shoving with some attempts to draw the Eagles into some rough stuff. Lots of gloating from the Eagles to instigate, but no excuse to the Stars. However, I still would not consider those actions disgusting.

You seem to assume I am blaming Jank for a horrible reffed game, when I am blaming him for 4 minutes of bad reffing. You should also notice that I did not blame Jank for the outcome of the game. If you believe different then I suggest reading comprehension classes.

Re: Congratulations Eagles

February 18 2008, 9:35 PM

Sorry Pepsi nothing official just what the volunteers were saying.

The time I got to the rink the second time this evening the story has changed.

Apparently tomorrow night in Peterborough this is how things are going to go down.

Peterborough awarded the penalty shot.

Both Teams replay the time remaining in game 1. 35 seconds or so is what was said.

If teams are tied sudden death over time until a winner.

After the replay of Game 1 is over. Game 3 of the series will start and we're back to normal.

Official or not I don't know that's just the word going around the rink.

Peterborough vs Bowmanville may have a few more fans tomorrow evening as there was quite a few
people talking about going to the game. Could be a double header if Peterborough ties it up and it
goes into double or triple OT.

What are the price of tickets up there for the first round anyone know?

Re: Congratulations Eagles

As far as the game sheet published either on or via Point streak, it wouldn't be the first time an electronic version was incorrect. As far as I know, the referee still counts the number of players prior to the start of the game and checks it against the paper copy of the game sheet that each team fills out. Perhaps I am wrong but isn't that paper copy the "official" game sheet?

Delay of Game

February 19 2008, 8:59 AM

A delay of game penalty with less than 2 minutes remaining should be a Penalty Shot. This is what Peterborough is probably protesting as there was a Delay of Game penalty well into the 19:00 minute mark of the third period.Interesting to see how this plays out!!

DELAY OF GAME PENALTY SHOT IN THE NHL...

February 19 2008, 9:41 AM

63.5 Penalty Shot - If the goal post is deliberately displaced by a

goalkeeper or player during the course of a “breakaway,” a penalty

shot will be awarded to the non-offending team, which shot shall be

taken by the player last in possession of the puck.

If by reason of insufficient time in the regular playing time or by

reason of penalties already imposed, the minor penalty assessed to a

player or goalkeeper for deliberately displacing his own goal post

cannot be served in its entirety within the regular playing time of the

game or at any time in overtime, a penalty shot shall be awarded

against the offending team.

No defending player, except the goalkeeper, will be permitted to

fall on the puck, hold the puck, pick up the puck, or gather the puck

into the body or hands when the puck is within the goal crease. For

infringement of this rule, play shall immediately be stopped and a

penalty shot shall be ordered against the offending team, but no other

penalty shall be given. The rule shall be interpreted so that a penalty

shot will be awarded only when the puck is in the crease at the instant

the offense occurs. However, in cases where the puck is outside the

crease, Rule 63 may still apply and a minor penalty may be imposed,

even though no penalty shot is awarded. The significant factor when

determining whether or not a penalty shot is warranted is the location

of the puck at the time it was held, grabbed or gathered into the body.

If the puck is in the crease, penalty shot. If the puck is outside the

crease and gathered into the body of a player (other than the

goalkeeper) who is inside the crease, minor penalty). See also Rule

67 – Handling Puck.

63.6 Awarded Goal - In the event that the goal post is displaced, either

deliberately or accidentally, by a defending player or goalkeeper, prior

to the puck crossing the goal line between the normal position of the

goalposts, the Referee may award a goal.

In order to award a goal in this situation, the goal post must have

been displaced by the actions a defending player or goalkeeper, the

puck must have been shot (or the player must be in the act of

shooting) at the goal prior to the goal post being displaced, and it must

be determined that the puck would have entered the net between the

normal position of the goal posts.

When the goal post has been displaced deliberately by the

defending team when their goalkeeper has been removed for an extra

attacker thereby preventing an impending goal by the attacking team,

the Referee shall award a goal to the attacking team.

The goal frame is considered to be displaced if either or both goal

pegs are no longer in their respective holes in the ice, or the net has

come completely off one or both pegs, prior to or as the puck enters

the goal.

63.7 Infractions – The following list of infractions shall result in a penalty

(minor, bench minor, penalty shot or awarded goal) being imposed by

the Referee for delaying the game:

SECTION 9 – OTHER FOULS

NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE OFFICIAL RULES 2007-2008

89

(i) Deliberately shooting the puck out of play.

(ii) Deliberately throwing or batting the puck out of play.

(iii) Deliberately displacing the goal from it’s normal position (or

accidentally by a defending player or goalkeeper in relation to the

awarding of a goal).

(iv) Refusing to place the correct number of players on the ice.

(v) Persisting in having players in an off-side position.

(vi) Deliberately falling on the puck.

(vii) Adjustment of clothing or equipment.

Can someone please explain the circumstances of the Delay of Game penalty from game # 1?

 Thanks.

Re: Congratulations Eagles

There are some subtle differences with regards to the wording and different interpretations. I don't have access to an on-line Hockey Canada Case Book Rule Book combination to refer to. Bottom line is the league is correct in their actions but I do think it should have been addressed prior to game 2.
