Waxers Complete the SweepMarch 1 2008 at 9:52 AM | Matty B (Login Matty__B) Registered Members |
| - Last night the Waxers came away with a 3-1 victory to end the Vipers season, in what was a surprise result for many fans. The game was much closer then the first two games of the series I witnessed. In this one the Vipers seemed to concede that the Waxers forwards were too quick for them and played some good old defensive hockey. Every time the Waxers had a break out the Vipers would seemingly always have two defensemen back. On offense they also had a large amount of control of the puck however that did not always translate to chances as the Vipers often threw the puck at the net and having it never reach it. On both ends the teams did a great job blocking shots and ensuring the opponent did not get great scoring chances. In my eyes Vaughan actually had more chances, but often not would miss the net completely or Kyle Rank stood up to the challenge.
David Kostuch put in the hat trick, which included 3 goals that are the epitome of a playoff goal, ugly with hard working making it happen. Kyle Rank played another great game and seems to be in the zone right now. No shot seems too tough as his confidence seems to be soaring. Last night was a great team effort for the Waxers as they dug deep and won a hard fought affair against a Vipers team that came to play.
Now they wait.
Just to add, I recall near the start of the season Frank yelling something to Rick about the Waxers choking in the playoffs, which right about now strikes me as pretty damn funny

I watch 3 of 4 games and Vaughan needed a goalie. Why did they let Iafrate go.? Nice move Frank. |

I heard they let Iafrate go to get Lombardi ... both are apparently overagers ... and so the cut the goalie they'd played with all year to get Lombardi. And had this new guy come in from some team up north.
All hearsay ... but if true, a great way to treat a good goalie. Irony is Iafrate then went to the allstar game. |

Wow the conference final could be pretty intense!
Im surprised that Markham knocked them off so easily.
If St.Mikes beats Toronto thats could be thebest series of the playoffs.
I wonder if some of the GMs dont reconsider the playoff set up! |

Had to sneak back on here to make one last comment while it's in the present. I have to say that the Vipers showed true class at the end of the game going over and shaking hands with the Waxers bench staff. Also, Agozzino who had been tossed from the game came back on the ice to shake hands with the Waxers. From a team that yaps so much and gives the impression that they lack class, it was quite the gesture to demonstrate that on ice personalities are not always what they seem.
Now back to cheerleading.

You cant win with a 18 year old goalie that is always on his knees. Joe C. knows he very well because he played for him at the midget team. |

This is the stuff of the real playoffs . The ugliness of the Stouffville/Huntsville bench incident is back page to this, IMO.
Congratulations to both teams.
To the Vaughan Vipers for demonstrating an elegance that is most difficult when you lose, particularly in a sweep.
Congratulations to the Markham Waxers who go on. They really do have a shot at a South Playoff Division championship.
