The Kingston KIMCO Voyageurs exploded for five goals in the second period and cruised to a convincing 7-1 victory to win the best of seven Eastern Conference Semi-Final series with the Port Hope Predators four games to one. The Vees got big offensive games from Vick Schlueter and Andrew Marcoux, who each chipped in with three points a piece.
The Vees will now gear up to face the Wellington Dukes, in the highly anticipated re-match of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals, to see who will take home this year’s Eastern Conference title.
Marcoux’s first goal was a shot through traffic that beat Predators goaltender Billy Stone early in the second period. Cole Weedmark then jumped on after the Vees had just killed a penalty and broke in on a breakaway and roofed a shot under the cross bar for the 2-0 lead. 41 seconds later Schlueter added his first of the night and Phil McIlhone snapped a shot off the post and in three minutes later to put the Vees up 4-0 and chase Stone from the net. Spencer Finney didn’t fair much better as Marcoux notched his second, by undressing half the Predators team and bouncing the puck off the water bottle on top of the Predators net to send the Vees to the dressing room with a 5-0 lead.
Schlueter and James Cameron added goals in the third for the Vees. The shut-out bid of Matt Hache was foiled by Joe Christiano midway through the third, when he jumped on a rebound and beat the sliding Hache, but it was too little and too late for the Predators. Hache was brilliant again throughout the night in the Kingston net.
“I’m very proud of the way the guys worked tonight and throughout this series,” said Head Coach Evan Robinson. “We sure didn’t have many passengers in this series. I can’t think of anyone on our team that didn’t contribute in some way to this series victory and we’ll need more of it, because it will only get tougher as we move along.
Andrew Marcoux was the Vees first star with two goals and an assist, while Vick Schlueter was the second star, also adding two goals and an assist and Brett Jendra was the third star with two assists and was his usual hard working, pesky self as well.
The Eastern Conference Finals will more than likely begin this Friday night in Wellington. Stay tuned to the Vees website and pointstreak.com for the entire schedule.
