WOW... I couldn't make it to the game... had to go out.
I watched the first period on the web and it was all Buzzers in that period.
I was pleasantly surprised to see the final score when I got home...5-2 Waxers
Lots of shot for both teams... 50-44 for the Buzz.
I'll take that any day as I think Rank is playing super in the playoff so far.
Looking forward to Matty's views.

Leave it to the Captain

March 15 2008, 12:41 AM

Waxers took the game tonight 5-2, but it did not look that way from the get go. The Buzzers scored the first two goals of the game and took advantage of a Waxers team that was getting out worked on the boards and forgetting defensive assignments. They seemed to have no backcheck, they were attempt some awful pinches at the blue line and when through it all gave up 8 odd man rushes by my count, which will usually not win you a hockey game in any circumstance. After the struggles Rick Cornacchia switched the lines around breaking up Scheu, Kostuch and Cornacchia putting each on their own line. It seemed to do the trick as the boys started winning battles and taking care of business. Unbelievable turn around as they scored a goal late in the first, 2 in the second and 2 in the third. Waxers also seemed to figure out their powerplay, which also seemed to key from the splitting up of the big guns, as they went 3/5 with the man advantage.

Once the Buzzers fell behind on the scoreboard they were unable to fall into their collapsing box around the net. This was forcing the Waxers forwards to skate around 2 players just to get a shot and all long rebounds were eaten up by the Buzzers forwards. Instead the Buzzers were forced to play more man on man and seemed to lose track of the puck in their own zone. Even though the Waxers were carrying the play the buzzers still had a bunch of chances, which lead to Kyle Rank coming up huge over and over again. Just a tremendous effort by Mr.Rank.

Perkins was pulled after the 5th goal and in my eyes did not play any different then his first two outings. Only difference was the Waxers played much better. No doubt Gershon is the better goalie, but considering how he has played I’d consider Perkins to be their best bet right now. He’s big and gets in the way of the pucks and lets off long rebounds, which the Buzzers collapsing box usually picks up and turns into fast break opportunities.

Also need to point out that the Buzzers lacked a lot of discipline tonight as four of their penalties were just complete brain cramps. Waxers played the game and when the whistle stopped they skated away. I have no comment on Brown's penalty because I did not see what happened. Pretty damn sure Palm would not call that if he did not see something.

Just want to take my hat off (even though I wasn’t wearing one) to David Kostuch who stood up like a true Captain and was probably the best skater on the ice. He was all over the place and showed the type of heart true captains call on when their teams back is to the wall

Hopefully, the Waxers figure out how to play the first period on Sunday and come back with the same effort they exhibited tonight. I also hope there are not too many grammatical errors in this post. Been a long day and it's time for bed.

Buzzers Goaltending

March 15 2008, 8:20 AM

From watching and examining the first ten games the Buzzers have played in this years playoffs, it certainly seems their goaltending could be their achilles heel this year. In the four games they have lost, two to the JC's and two to the Waxers, their goaltending was less than average at best. Frankly, with the exception of the two wins Perkins has had against the Waxers, where he did a great job, none of their four wins against the JC's were special. Every game, Gershon gave up at least one soft goal, sometimes more. His lack of solid play was hidden by a great team in front of him, and the JC's just could not match them goal for goal. I think you could argue they won the series against the JC's in spite of goaltending, not because of it. Going forward, you can't help but wonder what Ricci must be thinking. Go with Gershon, knowing he has been very average so far? Or go with the kid Perkins, who has had a couple of great starts and a not so great third one? It should be interesting. On the Waxers side, you ought to be thinking throw everything at the net and see what happens, especially early on in the game, as neither of the Buzzers goalies can have a tremendous amount of confidence right now, and an early goal or two could only rattle them more.

I couldn't come on here last night ... I was so rattled by the game.

Fact ... Buzzers owned the first 18 minutes of the first period. Markham looked like they didn't belong on the same ice.

Fact ... Buzzers gave the game away in the second. They have done this in the last few months consistantly. They lose their confidence and don't know how to maintain.

Fact ... Markham was the better team for the last 2 periods. The score board showed it.

I think the last comment on here was right. The Buzzers goal tending is showing to be their achilles heel. The very good team in front of it has consistantly won the games all year. Gershon is not a bad goalie ... just he is very streaky. And when he gets off his game ... its sooooo very hard to watch.

Markham still hasn't won the series. But I think that if the Buzz lose this series they'll be able to look back to a 10 minute span of time last night where they gave it away.

I think the problem is some people feel that the jersey they are wearing is enough to win games.

My opinion ... its not that Markham woke up and looked so good last night. The change in game happened in the other end of the rink. I didn't see the last goal (I was buying a coffee to calm my nerves) but from what I heard of how it transpired, it told the whole story.

It all comes down to goaltending. End of story.

Buzzguy and truth_man have it covered

"I think the problem is some people feel that the jersey they are wearing is enough to win games."
- Buzzguy

You may well have a point, Buzzguy . It sometimes comes down to being willing to make the commitment to do all the little things required to win. No champion is ever simply granted the right of passage simply because they are the defending champions.

"It all comes down to goal tending. End of story."
- truth man

It is the one common reoccurring theme, this time of year, in any playoff, at any level.

What did the Buzzers do to lose the game? In all honesty I saw the Waxers turn it on big time when they switched the lines up. I'm not being an ass or trying to start an argument, but I'd like to hear what you feel the Buzzers stopped doing that gave the Waxers the game.
