MONTREAL–Quebec’s director of public prosecutions has launched a criminal investigation into the junior hockey brawl that netted suspensions for former NHL great Patrick Roy and his son, among others.

The province ordered the investigation this afternoon after the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League suspended Roy, the Quebec Remparts coach, for five games for his part in an ugly brawl involving his son.

His son Jonathan, who attacked a rival goaltender and beat him up, was suspended for seven games.

The league said today that Patrick Roy is being suspended for ``prejudicial conduct” related to his team’s scrap with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens on Saturday.

Roy, who was on the bench during the brouhaha, denied playing any role in the melee, although he appeared to urge on his son Jonathan with a wave moments before he attacked the rival goaltender.

Jonathan Roy was suspended for seven games for barrelling into Chicoutimi goaltender Bobby Nadeau and pummelling him with repeated blows.

Nadeau covered his head and did not fight back.

The younger Roy ended the performance by giving the one-finger salute with each hand to Chicoutimi fans.

“The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League finds the events which took place over the course of last weekend’s games deplorable and unacceptable,” league commissioner Gilles Courteau said in a statement today.

“I’d like to warn organizations that these types of incidents will not be tolerated and that should any more occur, steep fines will be handed out.”

Chicoutimi player Sebastien Rioux was suspended for six games for leaving the penalty box to fight Roy after he gave Chicoutimi fans the finger.

Rioux’s coach, Richard Martel, received an automatic two-game suspension for his player’s conduct.

The brawl has been the talk of Quebec, with newspapers dedicating up to a dozen pages today to the debate over hockey violence. Even highbrow Le Devoir put the story on the front page.

The video clip of Roy’s attack has played thousands of times on the web and many more times on Canadian national television news and sports programs since Saturday night.

Quebec’s minister responsible for sport, Michelle Courchesne, promised to launch a national crusade against hockey violence with her provincial counterparts.

Her own son played three years in the QMJHL.

The brawl broke out near the end of the second period of Game 2 of their playoff series on Saturday with the Sagueneens leading 7-1.

After being restrained briefly by an official, Roy skated to the Chicoutimi goal, pulled off Nadeau’s mask andbegan punching him again and again, even after the Sagueneens goalie was flat on the ice.

Roy finally skated away, giving the finger with both hands to the braying Chicoutimi fans, and got into a fight with Rioux. Roy was assessed two fighting majors, a minor and two game misconduct penalties.

He made a public apology yesterday for making a rude gesture to the crowd but not for pounding Nadeau.

Nadeau, 20, led the QMJHL this season with a 2.63 goals-against average in 46 games and has allowed three goals in two playoff games.

The 19-year-old Roy was near the bottom of the league’s goaltending statistics in the regular season, with a 3-10 record in 22 games and a 3.96 goals-against average.

Neither player has been drafted by an NHL club.

Previous trouble for daddy...get some help, please!

March 26 2008, 9:08 AM

If I am not mistaken, was Mr.(I use the term loosely) Roy not embroiled in a situation while a member of the Avalanche? The man seems to have a problem that he must address before he's involved in something even more dispicable.
His son is still young enough to break away from what seems to be a VERY bad influence. Let's hope it's not too late.
Daddy has a anger management problem. His constant violent outbursts over the last few years, including his nasty confrontation with Ted Nolan, now coach of the Islanders, a few years ago, is legendary. His situation while in Denver, was nothing to be proud of, and one only can wonder why he was not made to go through anger management courses then.
Patrick, you are a goaltending legend. Do the right thing and take care of what's left of your ever diminishing public image, and get help while you are still a free man. The course you seem to be on can only end badly for you and many others.
