I would like to congratulate the Markham Waxers on winning the South/East division title. There were many people on here who said that Wellington would take the series easily, including myself, who frankly were wrong. Markham is a very good team and deserves to have won this championship!
Their speed and great goaltending were key in the series and Wellington could never find a way to beat goaltended Kyle Rank. David Kostuch and his linemates proved to be too much and too fast for the Dukes defense who relentlessly tried to slow them down but were unable to do so.
Good luck in the next series and congratulations on being the South East division champions.
That is what the Markham waxers have done. No small feat. they beat last year's South champs St. Michael's and the defending East and South-East Conference champion Wellington Dukes.
There's an old saying that if you want a championship, you gotta beat the champion.
The Markham Waxers did, just that. They are a hell of a hockey team who were just too strong physically for a game Dukes team.
I was impressed with their deep defence of Hamilton, McMullen, Roberge, Tanev, Zanetti and Harding. Their goaltender Kyle Rank is truly a character judging from his quirkish game preparation. Huge forward Kevin Hudes, with the Mike Commodore haircut , is a terrific player.
This team will be a big problem for whomever they play. They are good and have hit their stride as a group at the right time.
As one die hard Duke fan put it, before the game : " I don't know what's wrong with the Dukes. They have the talent but look to be just happy to be here. They lack a total team commitment of wanting it enough."
When your team is losing to a superior opponent, there is always the tendency to wonder why your team is not playing as well as you think they should.
I know the feeling all too well. The Vees were beaten by a superior Dukes' team.
It only hurts a little while.
It often boils down to the other team was just too good for them.
Congratulations, Waxers. It is no secret that I have known the Cornacchias since they were in Pickering, and remain in contact and consider them good friends to this day. Rick and Mark are a class act, as is the entire Markham Waxers organization. They are very deserving of being where they are, and it is great to see this success for them.
way to go waxers! keep the focus . you have a lot of new fans cheering you on! hopefully we will get to cheer you on in newmarket and beyond!

Way to go Waxers!
They were the 'underdogs' when they faced Vaughan, StMikes and Wellington. However, they've
made believers along the way. I suspect they will be the favorites in the finals.
Too bad.... I enjoy it better when the underdog comes through.
Question, for those who were at the Markham/Wellington 5th game winner.
Did coach Cornacchia shake hands with the Wellington players on the ice during the tradtional hand shaking ceremony after the game, or did he choose to shake hands only with the Duke's coaching staff, as he did at the end of the Buzzer series??
Congrats to each and every member of the Waxers who have had such a successful season because of hard work and dedication. The boys have done the fans and the community proud and no matter what happens that will never change.
