For immediate release

Collingwood Play for a Cure

Special Event – Saturday, April 19, 2008 – 7pm Puck Drops!

Collingwood, April 15, 2008 – The Collingwood CIBC Run for the Cure are Playing for a Cure on Saturday, April 19th, 2008 at the Eddie Bush Arena. The Puck drops at 7pm at centre ice for this very special premiere event which pits Collingwood Blues Alumni against our current Collingwood Blues roster in a bid to raise money to find a cure for Breast Cancer.

Event organizer Jen Nichol says, “As a Co-Run Director for the 2008 Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure in Collingwood, I wanted to put together another fun event to help raise money through our Collingwood run site. Last year we raised over $100,000 at the Run for a Cure event. We were looking for an event earlier in the year to kick off our teams promotions for the fall Run. My husband used to play for the Collingwood Blues hockey organization, so I know how much our community loves hockey. Putting on a hockey event to raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer seemed like a good fit. Last year, the Run Committee had a fantastic reception at a September Collingwood Blues game so we took it one step further to bring Blues Alumni into town. We got in touch with some past players as well as the past coach, Tim Dickey. Soon, everyone jumped on board with the idea of an Alumni game, including the Collingwood Blues Director of Hockey Operations, Darrell Mussell. We’ve had some exceptional community sponsors step up to promote the event and the cause and we’d like to give them all a hand! They include McNulty Printing, Athletic Knit, Simpson & Co. Insurance, Ace Cabs, Hanna Motors Ford, The Collingwood Connection and Boston Pizza.”

Randy Dagenais (#21) played for the Blues from 1996 until 1999. He is flying in from England to participate in this special Collingwood event. Randy says, “My time in Collingwood playing for the Blues remains one of my most memorable life experiences. So when Jen contacted me and asked if I would come back to be part of this game, I gave her an immediate yes...even though I would have to fly from England to make it here. I saw it as a great opportunity to visit with old friends and teammates. It’s a way for us to relive the past a little. The fact that we are also helping to raise money for breast cancer is an added bonus. Cancer is a disease that touches all of us in different ways at some point in our lives, so I felt it was important to try to chip in to help. I'd like to thank Jen Nichol for putting this event together. Thanks to her, all of us alumni will add one more fun night to our list of great memories from our time with the Blues."

The event will also have some wonderful prizes for a silent auction, including items specially sent to us from Don Cherry!

Jen adds, “The response to the game has been truly amazing. I am just as excited as everyone else to see these players return to the ice for one night as the Collingwood Blues. All the money raised on Saturday night will go to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation via our Collingwood CIBC Run for the Cure site. I hope to see everyone at the game as well as joining us at the CIBC Run for the Cure event in Collingwood at Harbourview Park on Sunday, October 5th, 2008. Thank you for helping us to create a future without Breast Cancer.”

It will be a fun, family event and folks can reserve tickets in advance by contacting Jen Nichol at scottnichol@rogers.com Tickets are $10 for adults, children at $5 and children 5 and under are Free. Fans are encouraged to come decked out in their best PINK gear as a show of support. It’ll be a Pink Night and guaranteed to be lots of fun.
