SHANE DOAN NAMED TEAM CANADA CAPTAIN FOR 2008 IIHF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP; MARTIN ST. LOUIS AND STEVE STAIOS NAMED ALTERNATE CAPTAINS

QUEBEC CITY -- Phoenix Coyotes’ forward Shane Doan, who is representing Canada for the seventh time in international play, was named captain of Team Canada on Saturday for the 2008 IIHF World Championship, which opens on May 2nd in Halifax and Quebec City.

Doan has played for Canada at four World Championships, capturing two gold medals (2003, 2007) and one silver in 2005, where he served as an alternate captain. He also played for Canada at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, winning gold, and at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.

“We know that Shane will do a great job in leading our team, as he did last year in Moscow where we won gold,” said Steve Yzerman, Canada’s General Manager. “We are very pleased with the leadership group named today, and we are confident that Shane, Martin and Steve will utilize their vast international and winning experiences in leading our team in Quebec City and Halifax.”

For an OPJHL tie in:

Mark Giordano was a key contributor to the Brampton Capital's OPJHL championship in 01-02.

Sam Gagner played 17 games with Milton as an AP.

Rick Nash also AP'd with Milton
