I was looking at an OHA Press Release and they were saying that the Fury wanted to relocate to Whitby... did this happen? I see they have a tryout there.
I had heard last season that a move was possible, but it depended on wether the dressing room space was going to be available. The rink already has private rooms for the Dunnies, and the lacrosse team takes up space, not much left. I hope they do...I always liked Iroquois.
There is a procedure in place if you want to relocate your franchise. Each team within a 50 km radius of the new location are asked to vote if they are in favour or not. If one team says they are against the move then the team cannot move...........unless you are friends with BL. Think about what could happen if teams were allowed to move where-ever they wanted. It always seems as though the Fury get what they want though. It is like when they were allowed to affiliate with Whitby Minor...when they were in Oshawa, a centre with AAA rep hockey. That was wrong too. I am of the understanding that there are NO AFFILIATIONS at all this year and you can play wherever you want....unless the Fury get an over ride on that too.
You're right...........now we will see who has the best scouting and reputation to entice these young men to their franchise. It will stop a lot of teams that hold local players on a card and never play them, just to stop another team from signing them. Now these kids can go where they want.
I personally think a move to Whitby is a good one. Oshawa is a dying market for this league, and Whitby has been, from what I understand, trying to get a junior team for a while. It only made sense for either Oshawa or Ajax to make the move. Great facility, great support for high-level hockey.
And incidentally, in the Metro East Junior Hockey league, which is being run out of the Campus Sports arena at UOIT, they are listing themselves as Whitby, so I am pretty sure this is no secret that it is a done deal.
It will be good for the fans from Pickering/Ajax/Whitby as fans and familys, dont have a long drive ahead of them, and will also generate much more attendace at these games this year!
Further to the move to Whitby, and the name change to the Whitby Fury, which I myself confirmed from the horse's mouth so-to-speak...
I have also ascertained that the Whitby Fury have hired a new General Manager.
Frank Robinson, former Panthers GM and architect of the Panthers team that went to the South Conference final two seasons ago will take over the GM duties for the Fury. This reunites Frank with his good friend and former Panthers head coach John Winder, which is terrific news for the Fury because Frank and John have great chemistry and a terrific working relationship.
Congratulations to Frank, who is a terrific hockey man and one of the nicest people in the game.
No. I have no actual inside position with the team. I just talk to Frank every Sunday at his MEJH games, and he knows I post on these forums, so he asked me to post the news about his position. As for official announcements or timelines, as of right now I have heard nothing.
I don't know what can be said about this that is negative. Organizationally speaking, I think the Fury are moving in the right direction.
First, the move to Whitby is one that I bet more than a few Jr. A teams are envious of. Hockey is extremely hot in Whitby right now, and Oshawa was cooling on the Fury for a long, long time, dating back to the Legionaires days. This move will increase fan interest, and I am guessing they will do very well at the gate.
Second, Frank Robinson has a great talent for digging up the hidden gems. He is also a straight-shooter, and will endear himself well to players and parents for his honesty and integrity.
I see Whitby as being on its way up, if not this season then within two.
Good for Frank, but how does one trust a GM that fired you previously? It is hard to go back, and this feels just like the days of Pickering, only in a different venue. Best of luck to both Frank and John, tough shoes for both to be in?

Sharpie, I was moving over to your side on this new conference as I thought you sounded passionate about it, although a bit misguided on the payback thing.
I have now had to give up on you. Buddy, there is a code of trust that is out there. It goes like this. We are friends, I bring you in because I trust you, we stick together. You don't throw your friend to the wolves and continue on when it is convenient for you.
When this came down, JW was very upset with how it happened and stayed that way for a long time. Betrayed would be the best way to describe it. The honorable thing for FR to do would have been to walk with his buddy rather than give it to him up the pooper. The talk around the arenas was one of amazement that he stayed around after firing the one who brought him to the dance.
If you think it was ok, I am glad I am not on your team.
This is not business at the level of Coach and GM in this league. If you were getting paid big $$ - yes, but we are talking expense here.
I can tell you this, hockey is game of teamwork and loyalty and when you cannot trust the people you work with, you are destined to fail.
There are some admirable people out there in this game and I can guarantee you that this would not happen in Wellington, Port Hope,
or with any team that have classy individuals running it.
No wonder Pickering was a mess last season with people who think like you. Maybe you should stay off this forum or support the new division as you may get more respect.
Hockeyguy, obviously you have never had a friendship that you valued more than a Jr. A coaching job. And anyone who told you that John Winder was bitter towards Frank obviously hadn't spoken to John. Or, if they had spoken to John, they were either intentionally or unintentionally misrepresenting his feelings when relaying them to you.

Sharpie - so you agree with me...
If you value a friendship more than a coaching job then you would leave as well ... as the friendship would be worth more..
Actually I have never had a Junior A coaching job but thanks for giving me the credit.
Also - I must apologize as I never heard from JW directly about his feelings at the time as I do not know the man however many people that I do know with the team that he went to do know him and sorry - he was not too happy with the way it went down.
"If you value a friendship more than a coaching job then you would leave as well ... as the friendship would be worth more.."
Actually, John was the coach, and I was referring to the fact that if I had a friendship I valued, and a Jr. A coaching job, and my friend was forced to fire me because the owners wanted to go in a different direction, then I would not hold a grudge against my friend.
And he may not have been happy about the way it went down. I am sure he probably wasn't. But what I said was that he was not bitter TOWARDS FRANK, which I do know.

Thanks for clarifying - nothing against either of them. Everyone has different agendas and different morals about how they would act when presented with situations.
Also - everyone is entitled to their opinion. Mine would be that I would walk with my friend rather than be put in the situation where you had to fire the person who brought you to party.
That's fair enough. But I can only go by what I know from having direct contact with the men involved over the past couple of years since. If John was angry about how things went down, and he very well could have been (I would have been) I am certain about the fact that he didn't hold it against Frank on a personal level. You are certainly entitled to your belief system and the fact that you would have handled it differently.
A coaching job in this league only is remebered by your last loss or not playing the owners kid a friend stays with you for life. FR should of walk with JW. What will happen when FR has to fire JW this year? It probably wont happen because the Fury will finish last again but if FR can find the GEMS ( which I am still wondering whom these GEMS were ) then they might make play offs. Good Luck.
As I said in my post above, I wish FR all the best. Realistically, one has to wonder how the Fury ownership expects FR and JW to turn things around? Yes, they should have pretty good goaltending in Foote, and some experience on the backend with returning vets, but where will be the firing power? Are there that many "GEMS" out there that want to play for the Fury? FR tried to find them last year for the Panthers but with the east of TO watered down with teams, just not enough good players to go around without spending some $$$$$$'s. If the Fury are prepared to open their wallets, they might get some premium players, but only "if"!!
Its like you agree Playr, lets get an OPJAHL Entry Draft May 2009.

I can see it now.....
After the draft, the Durham Fury trade their 1st round pick Joey Smith to Burlington for Burlington's 1st round pick Mike Jones.
Smith is from Burlington and wanted to play for the Cougars - he was drafted by Durham.
Jones is from Durham and wanted to play for the Fury - he was drafted by Burlington.
Not too sure what you are saying but if that is the case, a trade is a trade isn't it? Make the deal if it is good for both clubs and the kid will report? No different than any other draft/rights owned situation.
