I feel that a player should be with an organization for awhile to be named captain. If he is a hometown boy, that helps alot.
There are, of course, other considerations taken into account.
Stajan is in his sixth year with Leafs, including the lock out year, so he has been with the team for awhile.
I am not in the Leaf dressing room on a regular basis(not ever), I do not know any of the Leafs nor do I hang out with them, so I have to rely on what I hear.
I hear he is a good leader in the room and he is a Toronto native(Mississauga to be exact).
There real is not much of a choice.
McCabe is unwanted, probably will not return.
Tucker is gone, Sundin is not coming back.

Wex - I'm not sure what you're implying here but I think Mats has been a good captain.
Kaberla, Hay good select for the big "C" he would make a good one, but it would be sad to see "Sundin" leave as captain after all these years, he has did the Leafs great in his time here, but i would not blame him, for really trying for a cup ring before he retires!
And i am sure it wont come through Toronto in the near future!!!!
Do you remember when Sundin was acquired by the Leafs from Quebec ?
A lot of fans were happy with the move and thought this is the beginning of the march to the Cup.
Then Gilmour was traded and Sundin was named captain.
I remember the reception was cool.
I never cared for Sundin. He is a very talented player, but not my cup of tea.

Sundin is leaving the Leafs and it's a mutual agreement from both sides.
The Leafs are in a re-building mode.
The last thing they need right now is one player earning 6-7 million per season.
They are better off taking the money and paying 2 players 3 million each.
(It would be nice if the Habs sign him.... Leafs would get compensated for it.)
I've been a big Sundin fan .... He's a total class act!
Im not saying he was the Leafs savior, all i am saying, he was a good thing for the Leaf organization over the years.
If you are a Leaf fan, can you say when we were in the playoffs, or for that fact in a overtime game, you never said when "Sundin" scored the winning goal, boy its nice he is here, and not Quebec or Montreal?
He has earned his dues as a Leaf, and by saying that, i hope he gets his dream this year, no matter what team gets him, but to grab the "big ring"
that he has been prommised and desevers,all these years as a Leaf!!

Oh my ... I still am not convinced the guy belongs in the NHL. The only reason he doesn't play for the Marlies is because the Leafs are really that bad.
Has he really played for the Leafs 6 years?
Stajan is an example of how bad the Leafs really are. He is their best draft pick/developed player in the last 10 years.
They really are that bad of an organisation.
Anyone who suggests Stajan should be the next Captain, THINK! You go from a player of the calibre of Sundin to Stajan?
I was watching the Spin (on the Score) a few days ago and they said the Leafs might be interested in Brian Rolston of the Minnesota Wild. If the Leafs were to sign him I think he should be the Captin for the club, because he has been in the league for a while and was at one point the Captin of the Wild and last season wore the 'A'. So he definitely has the leadership.
...I'm about to agree with you about Stajan. Not that I think he has what it takes to be a captain, but I just had a look at the roster, and as hard as it is as a leaf fan to admit, there is nobody there if Sundin leaves! However I think it is time they finally blew it up. Actually Wex, after thinking about it, Kaberle would be a good choice too, now that Lidstrom has ended all that "European Captain" crap.
