I cant see a draft happening because a lot of teams dont billet there players!

teams that don't want to billet players can draft local players or pass when it's their turn. these teams that don't billet probably are the weaker teams on the ice. if a draft is put in it is to improve the opjhl as a league and any team that doesn't like it should think seriously about getting out of tier 2 hockey.

I DON'T LIKE THE DRAFT...

July 6 2008, 2:26 AM

So, does that mean if a player lives 30 KM north of Huntsville and is drafted by Wellington, he has to play in Wellington, sit out, or play minor hockey for one more year?

That makes very little sense to me.

Leave the choice to the players families'.  Don't force them to play 500 or more KM from home.

OPJAHL Entry Draft May 2009

July 6 2008, 7:16 AM

Just something for all the clubs in the OPJAHL to think about, that the GMHL has a draft every year, and these players go to these teams when drafted, even when it is a Non-sanctioned league.

The OPJAHL needs to put a Draft in place, so they dont loose these young players to the GMHL every year,do you all not think a player would rather be "drafted" to a league the is "sanctioned" by the OHF and Hockey Canada?

Get a draft together before the "GMHL" takes all the minor players available year in year out!

A theoretical draft could have several options:
1. They could place him on a nearby junior C team as an affiliate.
2. They could talk to the kid before the draft to find out his intentions then make a deal with his home town club.
3. The home town club could protect him.
4. If the kid is that desirable a player the OHL would most likely draft him and place him on a tier II team anyway.

I like the "idea" of a draft but given the vast geography of the draw area and the disparity in team finances I don't see it as a practical thing.

Perhaps a "regional" draft would be more feasible, drafting within a division say.

The Difference

July 6 2008, 12:25 PM

The GMHL has a draft, but their teams are all new and have no reputation, therefore it is a small difference between playing for King or Toronto. In the OPJHL try telling a top flight player that he is going to Ajax, Durham, Bancroft, Buffalo, Streetsville etc... The kid will probably refuse and trading that player for a player of equal talent won't happen either because once again who wants to play for any of those teams? Yes the OHL has players that don't report, but usually it's tied into the fact the player wants to go NCAA. In the OHL most teams rise and fall with the draft, but the draft is successful because teams are committed to winning and developing their talent from within. Anyone remember when the London Knights were the absolute worse team in the CHL? They got back to winning, but that is because the franchise was committed to winning.

Face it, in this league we still have the haves and the have not's and until teams start to prove they are ready to become haves then a draft will not solve anything.

Do some teams struggle getting top players? definitely.

Do some of the lower teams do a good job of promoting their players? some do

Lets face it, there is a lot more in this league that must change before a draft is implemented. A draft will not make a non committed franchise instantly competitive, but it would be a first step. However the franchise must take the first step to trying to become competitive before the league can implement a system to help them out.

K2

You are rite if your going to draft a player from where ever, you should see his intentions before the Draft, so you can maybe get a trade for your pick in the draft, or even a three way deal!

Re: OPJAHL Entry Draft May 2009

i think the draft is a good idea but i think it should be for 17 year olds. each team is allowed 2 16 year olds who would be exempt from the draft when they turn 17 as long as they were on a teams roster at the trade deadline. any player 17 that wants to play in the opjhl must submit their name and understand they could be drafted by any team in the league. any 18-20 year olds who are "free agents" to play tier 2 junior hockey would also have to submit their names for the draft. ALL teams must offer playing cards to drafted players that show up for their traing camps by Aug.31 or they become free to sign with any other team. players that fail to show have their rights held by their draft team for 2 years or until they report or are traded. i know this seams harsh but they were told before they put their name in the draft how it works. as long as rules are clear and parents and players are told up front how it works i think a draft could help level the play in the league.

OPJAHL Entry Draft May 2009

July 10 2008, 12:34 PM

You know that was a excellent suggestion, makes very understandable sense how this will not only help players and parents, but also make the opjahl a league for all to look forward to playing in.

What could we as FAN READERS do to convince the OHA & the OPJAHL to go forward on this issue?

OPJAHL Entry Draft May 2009

July 10 2008, 12:48 PM

Now that i think about this more, this could be great for the FAN Readers come FEB/MAR/APRIL, in regards to the upcoming "May DRAFT"

Lots on the table to write and read about, it would be an exciting few months for all leading up to the draft in May 2009, in a OPJAHL town selected for the draft, and others in the future.

Could go 4 or 5 rounds, that would be determined by the amount of players listed for the draft of that year.
