Seriously, I wouldn't give up Cogliano for Heatley straight up; but to throw Penner into the mix as well?

I just don't get it.

The deal is more like Cogliano and Smid for Heatley and Ottawa taking Penner. Penner is overpaid and pretty much useless. He scored 18 goals last year, but the kid looked slow and out of shape for much of the season. Cogliano is another forward in a organization that is stocked with good, fast and skilled forwards. Smid on the other hand is the real loss to Edmonton as they lose a very solid defenseman, but I think they feel Peckham, Grebeshkov (if he does not head back to Russia) and Chorney are either ready or soon will be ready to step up.

BTW, Tambellini is the GM.

a little too much

I dont think the Oilers should have included Smid.... unless they are clearing salary due to an impending free agent signing. And getting someone to take that stiff Penner is nothing short of a miracle. The Oilers missed the playoffs and will probably be life and death just to squeeze into them next year so changes had to be made.

Would have liked to have seen Cogliano come to the Leafs sad.gif

Burke is annoying me with all this "lets get tougher talk". Leafs problem isnt toughness... it's lack of skilled offensive players that can put the puck in the net. Leafs need some snipers.... plain and simple. Phil Kessel would be a nice addition, but not if it involves a first rounder.

Dany did not waive his no trade clause.

Guess Dany wanted his $4 million bonus, more than he wanted out of Ottawa!

Yeah, but Lowe is the one you always see on TV, talking about how important it is to the Oilers organization to bring guys with the right attitude into the dressing room. Heatley doesn't seem to fit that description at all.

Anyways, it seems the Rangers are still trying to make a play. That would be a much better fit.

Heatley still does have value and yes coglino/penner/smid is fair value.

heatley gets his $4 million regardless of where he is. ottawa's position is if they pay it he is staying in ottawa.
edmonton and ottawa should have given him a 11:59AM deadline to accept the trade or it was going to be withdrawn and he would be a senator for the remainder of his contract. the senators messed this up they should have told him to waive his no trade clause when he asked for the trade. if he asked to be traded he shouldn't be able to prevent ottawa from getting the best return possible.
