Worst tournament set-up ever.....I've played in a couple with a format like this, it makes no sense. Technically, Huntsville, Trenton and Villanova could all win all three of their games 10-0..and only one of them would advance to the final..and in that final, play some team who lost all three games by a 10-0 score.
In a 6-team tourney (where three round robin games is preferred), better just to have a random selection. It's still not ideal, but statistics would most likely yield a more fair result.
ie.
1 vs 2,3,4
2 vs 1,4,5
3 vs 1,5,6
4 vs 1,2,6
5 vs 2,3,6
6 vs 3,4,5
Umm...what. Yes you're right, I just used an example that Pool A could totally dominate Pool B, yet the winner of Pool B still makes the final, it's a bad set-up. In this hypothetical situation Pool B could totally dominate Pool A just as much...
Are you new to this hockey thing, ever seen a Minor Hockey Tourny where they have 4 Pools and the top 2 advance from each pool, they don't care whether one pools better then the other. I do agree with you though. I always figured there should be no pools at all, top records advance...
while i'm sure all the teams would like to play the extra game in the final, winning this tournament is not the why they entered. the teams play so they can evaluate their players in 3 games over a short period of time. a team that loses all their games will learn just as much about their players as a team that wins all their games.
propertyof...you're not getting this are you? If you have 2 pools with four teams in each pool, and you play the teams within your pool, then usually one goes 3-0, one goes 2-1, one goes 1-2, one goes 0-3. There are of course slight varations, but if two pools have that, and the top team from each pool move on, then usually no one worse then a 2-1 advances.
But in this tourney, you only play the teams from the OTHER pool. But still the pool winners move on. It's different. Think about it, come back when you have a logical argument on how it's more fair.
Imagine the world juniors.
Pool A - Canada, US, Russia
Pool B- Kazakhstan, Lativa, Belarus.
But you only play the three from the other pool..and only the top one from each pool makes it to the gold medal game. So you're competing within your pool for one spot..but you never play them head-to-head.
Agreed with the previous poster through, this tourney means little to the actual teams. Just pointing out the fact the format is flawed.
